Sorry wasnt sure where to post. Just been to DD 2nd year shared uni house. This is outside, under the window. It looks so dodgy to me but they have been given an electrical safety certificate. Does anyone with any electrical knowledge know if this is dangerous, or am I over-reacting?
Rest of the house is also grim unfortunately.

that Looks like a tv aerial connection to me?

but I have zero qualifications or knowledge!

Breadcat24 · 02/09/2024 12:27

It is a co-axial cable and a cable to a dish. It is not great but not super dangerous

ConfusingPainAdvice · 02/09/2024 12:27

these are the outside sockets, not sure how they passed these

That's incoming communications wiring - phone line, cable TV or similar.

It's low voltage and not dangerous but definitely shoddy and needs sorting out before it causes issues.

Really hard to see with the blurry pics but that looks like a defunct outside socket which doesn't have any wiring going into it - assuming the blurred pic is showing that there's no socket face on it(?)

Edit: sorry, not blurred once opening the pics.

Yes those look dodgy!

That's not an electricty conmection. It looks like a copper broadband/TV connection. As people have said it is low voltage so unlikely to be dangerous.

It looks like a Virgin Media external box to me.

ConfusingPainAdvice · 02/09/2024 12:38

thanks that is good to know re the tv connection one. the back gaden ones both have a plastic cover over them and large rubber housing of cables going into them from the bottom. I lifted the covers to take the photos.

The latter two pictures look to be 13 Amp external mains outlets and were probably installed correctly BUT seem to be ion a piece of wall with overgrowing vegetarion and dirt so getting covered in dirt. Not dangerous in itself but should have been kept clear and clean (possibly in a forgotten corner?). Tell DD not to touch these sockets and all should be well. The fitst picture, as said is telephone and satelite type cabling, obviously not properly rain proofed but not dangerous to be touched.

wombat1a · 02/09/2024 13:34

First picture looks like cable/adsl/tv so not an issue. Second picture looks like it needs a clean but can't see anything really dangerous.

MistyMountainTop · 02/09/2024 13:51

That looks like an external Virgin media box with the cover missing. You just need to find a cover & pop it back on, it's probably under a nearby bush.

Ginmonkeyagain · 02/09/2024 14:19

If those other pligs are external they look like normal three pin sockets ones fixed deliberatdly outside to power things like outdoor lights or other electrical equipment.

You can see there are covers that are meant to be used to keep out dirt and water. They just look at bit dirty. But I would not use them in case water had got in.

@ConfusingPainAdvice

id be more concerned with the inside of the property if it 'just as bad' & filthy.

dome student accommodation isn't fit for habitation, let alone at the rent they're demanding.

ConfusingPainAdvice · 02/09/2024 14:26

it certainly wasnt fit when they got the keys, but they have addressed the most pressing items, and the tenants will document the rest so that it doesnt get deducted from their deposits next year
