So I was listerning to LBC news this morning and it was reporting about George Clooney saying how selfless Joe Biden was by stepping down. The article was George Clooney said this, George Clooney said that. Now I dont much care about politics UK or USA but Im fed up with these personality rattleing on about there political beliefs. Who cares what an Actor thinks and stop giving them air space its getting so boring, just because you were in a few films and made loads of cash, what gives you the right to lecture to us. Its the same at any award ceremony, just get your award thank your family etc then shut up and get off the stage. End of rant.

I think their success in acting leads them to believe they are more important than they really are.

His opinion is no more well-informed or valuable than the man on the street but he thinks it is and he has a platform.

It doesn't bother me too much but I think you re right OP.

Pot kettle

Why should anyone care what you think?

Or maybe everyone is entitled to share their opinion

Lemons1571 · 02/09/2024 06:22

Hasn’t he always been interested in politics and the White House (ala Reagan, who was also an actor)?

Newuser75 · 02/09/2024 06:24

I kind of think it's good that people in the public eye talk about politics as it brings issues and policies to people who may not otherwise research and find out.

I completely agree.
I also expect him to run one day.

Also agree. I have no problem with celebs highlighting issues that are important to them.

I think George Clooney talks a lot of sense. I don't care if he's an actor, the USA is needing someone who talks sense

username44416 · 02/09/2024 08:42

I agree in part but he was probably being asked about it. Clooney sees himself as quite political and has always spoken out about politics. People in the public eye get asked about their opinions on current issues.

Sartre · 02/09/2024 08:44

Someone will have asked for his thoughts I’m guessing so he gave them because the alternative is just awkwardly shutting the question down. His response was then reported. He didn’t write a book on Biden’s presidency, he just answered a reporter’s question.

MrTwatchester · 02/09/2024 08:46

Clooney is a major Democrat activist and donor, apparently he was influential in Biden stepping down. It's not like they've asked any old bloke.

SocksAndTheCity · 02/09/2024 08:50

Clooney was asked about it following an opinion piece he wrote for the New York Times a couple of months back asking Biden to step down, so the Venice interview was really a follow up. He can also spell and use punctuation properly.

newnamesix · 02/09/2024 08:50

I don't mind if celebrities speak out on issues, I generally figure they're free to have their say, I'm free to listen or ignore (which is generally what I do). They also risk losing work and/or part of their audience if their views are unpopular, so it's up to them if they think it's worth it.

In the case of Clooney and Biden, though, I think the point was that he knows him moderately well, or at least has spent quite a bit of time with him and saw a real and sudden change. My guess is that there were people closer to Biden who were having a hard time convincing him to step aside and they gave the nod to Clooney writing that piece to try to exert some pressure.

Gardendiary · 02/09/2024 08:54

Well he’s probably being asked about it by journalists and is therefore giving his opinion. He’s known to be respectful to the press and is therefore answering fully and not just giving ‘no comment’ type answers. Seems reasonable to me.

Yes, exactly. It’s not as though journalists were asking the cast of Made in Essex for a detailed account of their thoughts on Labour’s likely future policy on reversing Brexit.
