to think all baby boys can’t be this way

My DS has started crawling and can stand up
every single day without fail he either will fall back on his head, bounce his head on the wall or even sometimes launch himself off furniture. Obviously I try my hardest to prevent this but even laying him on the carpet for a few minutes results in injury. I know boys are more adventurous but it seems constant and it’s impossible to get anything done?

My ds literally got a bump note most days at nursery. He's broken his wrist twice. Has multiple scars. Knocked a tooth out and bent (but thankfully didn't lose) two of his adult teeth.

He's nine now and I would say it's been two years since our last hospital visit so I'm hoping he's improved.

My two dd never had a broken bone or significant injury. Just the occasional scraped knee/elbow.

Get a playpen

MarathonofLife · 02/09/2024 06:56

Totally normal and unavoidable

BananaGrapeMelon · 02/09/2024 07:00

I had very active boys who got lots of bumps! The good news is that they're both easy teens, still active and sporty but not difficult like some teens. Hang in there OP!

Boys are not more adventurous, let’s just bin that narrative.
Babies learning to crawl and pull up will fall over. It’s not a boy thing.

OP my first baby I coined a “hazard hunter” constantly had a spilt lip, no fear or self preservation skills at all. He’s fine now he’s 5. He’s still quite adventurous but he does have some risk assessment abilities. I used to take several “accident forms” for accidents he had at home and resulting bruises to his childminder each week sure that the next would result in a social services referral.

My second, total opposite, tells me not to drive the car too fast and obviously he had bumps but he was not as accident prone as no.1. Accident forms very rare.

DoIWantTo · 02/09/2024 07:16

No, not all boys do that. Not all girls do that either. Some babies struggle more with getting their motor skills under control. Bizarrely the age of the baby seems to be a massive factor, under 3 and the risk of accidents skyrocket. For some weird reason it decreases with age, apparently something to do with having learned from all the bumps they have themselves before and their growing control over their fine and gross motor skills. But in other times you get the really weird ones who turn into adults like me that still banging into every solid surface around them. Your sex has absolutely no basis on any of it though.

I had B/G twins so got to witness the different ways people reacted to their very ordinary milestones. ‘Oh he’s a brave little lad’ to him and ‘Careful sweetheart’ to her.
OP sorry you’re getting a hard time but maybe try and gently stop your friends making these comments. He’s learning and every day will balance his wobbly little body better.

lavendersol · 02/09/2024 07:19

A play pen is ideal and the only way I could get things done with a little one. They're a godsend

Lemonadeand · 02/09/2024 07:24

I’ve seen those baby backpacks with the soft angel halo thing? Might help? My little boy wasn’t like this at all; he’s always been quite cautious.

LunaandLily · 02/09/2024 07:29

No, my daughter was as you describe. Nephew was born clutching a health and safety manual.

BumpyaDaisyevna · 02/09/2024 08:15

I had one boy and one girl both very cautious types.

The only injury either ever had was a scraped nose at 14-15 mths when they face planted when first learning to walk. They made very sure to be cautious not to do THAT again!

Oh and DD hurled herself down three stairs in protest at the arrival home of her baby brother.

Other than that - nothing.

TBH I used to see videos of tiny babies climbing in and out of cots and over stair gates and wish my two were a bit more ... adventurous 🤣
