To not buy DD new school uniform, shoes, bag etc.

Hi everyone.
I've seen numerous posts (mostly pictures) on Facebook from parents buying their kids new school uniform, shoes, bag etc. And wondered if I am being unreasonable for not buying DD who's going into year 2 tomorrow anything new as I feel it's a waste of money and I have nowhere to put her 'old' stuff.
I tend to get her a new pair of black trainers and a cardigan every few months, with the most recent purchase being in May. Both items are holding up pretty well..
I'm concerned she'd feel upset if all her friends have new stuff and she doesn't.

I do donate the old uniform back to the school for their second hand uniform sale thing, though

I don't know anyone who doesn't kit their child out in new uniform for the first day back, unless last term uniform looks brand new. I've lived in a low/upper low income areas. If you are buying new every few months then their size can't be changing. So buy new for yhe first few days, then mix and match. Doesn't a 12 year old want a new backpack etc? The old one can then get used for days out. Take the lead from your DD. If school uniform prepares them for life, then the norm is to wear new or looking new clothes for the first day in a job/interview.

it never occurred to me to buy anything new unless the previous uniform was outgrown or worn out. At primary, they went back in summer dresses in September, but no way would I have bought new for those six weeks. I usually got dresses on the large size to do at least 18 months/two years, and the replacement would be in the spring to last the next two years. I don't think that's unusual.

DD's secondary school changed uniform when she went into year 8. She hardly grew after that point, so she was wearing the same uniform for GCSE. (However if it wasn't for covid, I think the trousers would have worn out and had to be replaced - they were definitely on their last legs.)

I’ve only got new shoes but his uniform was a bit tight after 6 weeks of grandparent’s treats, I’m hoping he’ll lose a few pounds over the next 6 weeks of school/inevitable illness!

I don't replace anything that doesn't need replacing. My youngest is starting reception in Wednesday and will be wearing his brothers uniform from 6 years ago that I just pulled out of the cupboard, he's got new shoes and a new water bottle, his lunch box from nursery last year is perfectly fine
