Home insurance

Hi all,

My home insurance was up for renewal but has since expired. I didn’t get around to renewing it as I have been stressed with work. To the extent that I’m now kicking myself as if I had renewed it sooner, I’d be covered with legal expenses.

is there any point in renewing my insurance now? The only thing I’d really need is the legal cover. I’m not sure if I shouldn’t bother due to the gap between this and my last policy which was a few months.

In terms of legal cover, my work situation is still progressing so I could arguably say I wasn’t reliant on needing to claim legal expenses. I haven’t placed a formal complaint yet for example and there’s a chance things could be resolved. Plus some of the incidents happened when I was covered by insurance previously.

Yes, get insurance. You aren't normally covered for general legal expenses, only those relating to a claim on your home insurance.

Why would you not insure your home? I don't understand the reasoning that the only thing you need is legal cover. What if there's a fire or something in your house

Lancrelady80 · 01/09/2024 02:34

Why do you not need home insurance to cover your actual home? Surely that's the point of it!

Badgerandfox227 · 01/09/2024 02:41

You need home insurance mainly for your buildings and contents.

if you’re in a Union, you usually have Legal cover so worth checking that.

The main reason I don’t need home insurance is because I rent and I live in a secure apartment building so it would only be contents insurance.

So surely you'd get contents insurance. Why would you not get it?

sure but my thoughts were around the legal cover and potentially needing to use it in the future. I’m not sure if I’d be eligible to use it,

I have had home insurance for 30 years and never even checked to see if they have legal attached to it. What would you use legal cover attached to house insurance for? I acknowledge if your house burnt down and you were bickering with the surveyors you might want legal cover but that doesn’t apply to you.

@Swingsandslides you could probably search online for a more detailed answer but legal cover does not necessarily come attached, with some providers you have to pay extra to have it. You can use it for most things you need legal support with - it’s not limited to home legal issues. Each provider has their own offering. You’re probably just lucky enough to have not needed legal counsel, as most places you go to for help such as ACAS or Citizen’s Advice will ask you to see if you have legal cover via your insurance.
