How do I stop slugs coming in my house?

So fed up of standing on slugs! There's no food source, my house isn't damp, I have no idea how they get in at night. How do I get rid of them?! They've multiplied like crazy this year.

Leave the light on. We used to have a victorian house with suspended wooden floors and they came up in the kitchen....they didn't come up if the light was left on though.

I have slugs coming in my bedroom - a bungalow! I’ve tried everything but they are coming up from the underfloor space which has an earth floor as a soak away for excess water when the water table is high. I think they breed down there and then the babies go exploring after they hatch, the ones I see are quite small.

I thought my measures last year had been successful, I pushed copper wire/mesh in the gap between the carpet and the skirting board then covered it with finely crushed egg shells. I also spayed a natural deterrent I bought from Amazon.

But no, I’ve seen two sneaking around in the last few days and spotted a load of slimy trails under my bed - looked like there had been a party under there! So it’s back to sleeping with a lamp shining up close to the carpet edges like a search light in a prison! I stay awake until very late and tend to wake up every hour or so to check my room before finally settling down when it gets light so I can turn off the light and get a few hours sleep. I’ve tried wearing an eye mask but I don’t like having my face covered and get too hot.

I’m Thinking of getting someone to pull back my carpet and filling up the gaps but it’s a brand new carpet, the first new bedroom carpet I’ve had for over 30 years so it’s a last resort.

I really do hate slugs!

marmiteandminticecream · 01/09/2024 05:24

i had the same problem in the kitchen so i put some slug pellets outside under the kitchen window just scattered them
haven't seen a slug since

Fintoo · 01/09/2024 05:31

Yep, salt and pellets. I tried to be kind to snails for the last couple of years. Big mistake. My garden was like a commercial snail farm this year. These things reproduce like rabbits.

Merryoldgoat · 31/08/2024 23:19

Mine got in through an airbrick

We put mesh over it and that stopped them.

They’re absolutely disgusting

Are you my husband? 🤣🤣

OneTooFree · 01/09/2024 06:25

They hate crushed egg shells and alpine grit, you could sprinkle a line of that on the outside of the door if you don't want to kill them with salt.
A few years ago, I came home from the pub where I'd had a few too many and found the patio heaving with those thick black slimy buggers, so in my alcohol induced wisdom, I threw salt over them all and went to bed.
I got up the next morning to a horrible snotty mess that did neither my constitution nor my hangover any good.

PortiasBiscuit · 01/09/2024 06:32

Copper tape around the door frames. They hate copper.

Chucklit · 01/09/2024 06:41

I hate the bloody things. They make their way int

Chucklit · 01/09/2024 06:47

Oh bugger. Sorry I clicked the wrong thing 🙈 they make their way into my rabbit and guinea pigs hutches and daily I’m flicking them out with a bamboo stick. The worst was when I came down in the middle of the night and this big slimy fucker was sliding around my kitchen sink. First time that's ever happened. It was flung outside and I copiously salt the plughole every night now. The bastard had slithered over my clean dishes I'd left to dry, over the dish sponge, all sorts Envy not envy!

Blackcats7 · 01/09/2024 06:48

Check and treat any possible damp, pull back any soil in contact with outside wall and put sealant along the join between skirting board and floor.
Check in kitchen or bathroom cupboards fixed to the wall for damp and seal too.

Had this for 2 years when we moved in our house i was seriously ready to move out we bought this spray recommended on here & have never an issue since!! it's honestly a miracle worker! make sure u spray Every crook and cranny u think they can get in. By the way we worked out they were getting in through the air bricks so worth checking these too.

EcoWidow Natural Slug and Snail Repellent Killer Spray - 500M
This actually works!! It has completely solved our slug problem. Sprayed it liberally around door frame and cat flap everyday for a week and haven’t seen one since. It doesn’t smell too bad either. I top up by spraying every month

Ah see someone has already recommended!! We tried salt/copper tape/pellets u name it but this poster is right when they say this seriously works!

filka · 01/09/2024 07:21

Look on Amazon for Garland GAL13ST Slug X Trap
Works for us.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 01/09/2024 07:58

Put a sign up, like this.

It needs to be at floor level as slugs are very short sighted (sometimes they need wear thick glasses).

How do I stop slugs coming in my house?
Kinny03 · 01/09/2024 08:03

We had same. Put some slug pellets down where you're seeing the trails. We did this they've not been back in weeks 🤞🏽

Kinny03 · 01/09/2024 09:36

If you do put slug pellets down in the house, then just be very careful if you've got children or animals. I've got no pets and my child was old enough to understand not to touch them. Mine are coming through my under stairs cupboard and I've sprinkled the pellets in there so they're put the way of the main household anyway. Maybe just trial it and see...

blackoverbillsmothers · 01/09/2024 09:43

I had this problem briefly. I followed the trail to see where they were coming in. It was the skirting board and there were no noticeable gaps. I put salt down. Didn’t quite get the right spot the first time but the second time sorted it. That was a couple of years ago and no sign since 🤞. I feel like I’m tempting fate saying that. 😂

MrsMoastyToasty · 01/09/2024 09:51

We had them coming in where the incoming water supply pipe came through the floorboards to the internal stop tap.
When we lifted the floorboards to do some further investigation we discovered a leak and the void below the house was like a lake. We replaced the service pipe all the way from the street to the internal stop tap - (it was made of lead so we were going to do it some time , but obviously had to do it sooner). Once the "basement slug pool" dried out we had no more sluggy visitors.

MyKidsAreTooNoisy · 01/09/2024 06:23

Are you my husband? 🤣🤣

Lol - maybe - my kids are too noisy as well 🤣🤣

Joddlebod · 01/09/2024 10:25

We had this issue. They were getting in the most tiny gap where the porch connected to the house. Silicone seal everything!! we set up a baby cam to try and catch where they were coming in.

Coatscoatscoast · 01/09/2024 10:36

Ours come in under the back doorstep, but seem to have stopped since we had a new damp proof course put in (despite the doorstep still have a gap, that’s the next job). Maybe we’ve just been lucky

Copper tape around the door frames. They hate copper.

The ones in my house have no problem crossing over copper tape! I’ve seen them totally ignore it.
