If you live in a block of flats, do you recycle?

I often only see the giant grey waste bins but nowhere to recycle.

Are there recycling bins also?

Usually yes, they were orange topped jn my old place

Thevelvelletes · 29/08/2024 19:55

Yes , large communal recycling bin outside.

Mousespace · 29/08/2024 20:00

No. We have one standard sized recycling bin between 7 flats emptied every two weeks. If I catch the bin empty I fill it up with what I can, but I can’t hoard two weeks recycling in the flat for a bin that the neighbour might fill to before me. The bins filled within a day of pickup.

I tried to do the right thing and save it up, but I don’t have a car for the recycling centre and the council took away the large on street bins I used to use, so I have no choice, it mostly goes in the regular bin now. Your mileage will vary depending on council and flat block.

Yes, the flat I lived in had recycling and normal bins, the recycling stuff was in a little brick bin shelter.

Ididntsaybanana · 29/08/2024 20:02

Yes we did, but we really wanted to. The kitchens were absolutely tiny, space for seperate bins was a big issue.

Princessfluffy · 29/08/2024 20:03

If there is not enough space in your recycling bin if you phone the council they will provide you with an extra bin free of charge.

Disasterclass · 29/08/2024 20:04

Yes, big communal bins and bags supplied to fill up

JohnTheRevelator · 29/08/2024 20:05

No, there are no facilities for recycling. About 6 years ago,our local council started leaving transparent bin bags for us to put cardboard, newspaper, tins and plastic in,but this only lasted about a year. We were told to put these recycling bags next to the communal bins, but the bin men were just lobbing them into the bins with all the other rubbish!

Yes. We contacted the council twice weekly at one point when they weren't emptying out communal recycling bin enough. It's now collected weekly and generally very full by the 7th day

Ginmonkeyagain · 29/08/2024 20:14

Yes, we have six big communal bins - 3 for general waste and 3 for recycling and they are both emptied every week.

It's annoying we can't have food recycling but a big old bin full of food would be a bit gross. When I lived in a little block of four flats we had normal wheelie bins - three separate bins shared between two flats - one for normal waste, one for recycling and one for food.

Needmorelego · 29/08/2024 20:17

Technically we have separate recycling and non recycling dumpsters. But the recycling ones are always full of non recycling 🙁
The bins are regularly emptied though - sometimes more than once a week - which is good I suppose because it means we don't get overflowing too much.

Ofalltheginjoints · 29/08/2024 20:21

The flat I used to live on had general rubbish big bins on each floor but the recycling was 3 big bins downstairs on the bin store so we used to have a cycle bag to take out whenever we went downstairs, this was fine until the building manager locked the bin store as people were recycling too much.

This became a regular thing up until I moved out, the recycling bins would be full within 3-4 days so were then locked until they were emptied on day 7

OurChristmasMiracle · 29/08/2024 20:26

No bin for recycling here. Just big standard rubbish bins- probably to save the block management company money tbh. They’ve also turned the boiler for heating off (which we pay a service charge for!)

spikeandbuffy24 · 29/08/2024 20:30

Yes, we all have individual standard grey bins and recycling bins so same as a house

Iheartmysmart · 29/08/2024 20:40

We used to have our own recycling boxes which could be put out fortnightly together with clear bags of plastic recycling. Then we were told the boxes had to be kept in our flats and not on the landings so everyone got rid of them. A few communal bins were provided but nobody uses them properly so the recycling lorry often won’t take them because there’s rubbish in them as well. We can’t recycle plastic at all. I take mine to the tip occasionally but a lot goes in the bin. Such a shame.

GenAvocadoOnToast · 29/08/2024 20:44

Yes. We have a room that houses 2 rubbish bins and 1 recycling bin between 20 flats. The recycling bin is supposed to be emptied once a week but sometimes it’s two. It fills up very quickly, often with boxes that haven’t been broken down and all sorts of stuff that can’t be recycled. A couple of weeks ago it was full of bagged up shredding. Sometimes I wonder if there’s any point.

Irridescantshimmmer · 29/08/2024 20:47

There is very little space in my kitchen for recycling because the kitchen is very narrow, but I manage.

The bins attract flies the size of dogs in summer and I am not even exaggerating.

We have recycling bins for paper, landfill, tins and glass but not for compost, don't know why not to be honest. Our bins are not the large industrial bins, they are Wheely bins in a sectioned off area where the washing lines are but most Tennant's dry their washing indoors because we don't want our clean clothes to stink of rotting rubbish and dead rats.

There is a neighbour who keeps using flats bins because their bins are half the size of ours, so I open my window and he runs back into his house...........🤣

I recently got this to deal with recycling taking over my kitchen https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/hallbar-bin-with-lid-light-grey-50420206/ there’s a 30L bag for it sold separately. I don’t know how I survived without it.

AgileGreenSeal · 29/08/2024 20:58

I used to live in a big old house that had been made into flats in a row of similar properties. There were just huge dumpster type skips in the alleyway at the back. Some tenants didn’t even bother going down they just lobbed bags of rubbish, nappies etc in the general direction of the skip from the fire escape. It was horrendous. As for recycling?? Not a chance.

RichPetunia · 29/08/2024 21:00

I know people who stay in a flat. They have grey bins only and no recycling facilities.
