Worried about my son being made fun of because of his scooter

My DS turns 6 in October and he’s only just this summer holidays got into going on his scooter. He’s really enjoying it, however the scooter is 3 wheels. He hasn’t learnt to ride a bike yet and struggles a bit with balance and co-ordination (I suspect he is ND but no diagnosis yet).
I myself didn’t learn to ride a bike without stabilisers until I was 10.
He wants to start riding it to school, but most of his friends are on two wheeled scooters or riding bikes already.
He is the oldest boy in his class too and tall for his age , plus he’s lost 5 baby teeth already so I’m concerned he looks older than he is anyway.
I have attached a pic of the scooter to gauge other’s opinions.
The fact he’s enjoying it now is great though , as it’s taken him this long to even be interested.

In reception and year 1 normally see plenty of three wheelers. Year 2 they do all tend to be on bikes or two wheel scooters.

OneFastDuck · 29/08/2024 13:52

I don't think there's anything wrong with that scooter. I was expecting a Peppard pig one or something.

They don't advise 2 wheelers until 6/7 anyways and I'm sure there'll be a few in his class who can't ride anything

Underthesinkk · 29/08/2024 13:53

My child is going into Y2 and even then I don't think anyone would say anything about a 3 wheeled scooter. There's a mix of all sorts of things.

cadburyegg · 29/08/2024 13:55

I have 2 DSes who enjoy using their 3 wheeled scooters still - they are 9 and 6! It never occurred to me it would be an issue. both of them can ride bikes no problem but the scooters are so handy because they are easier to put in the car if I have to pick them up if it's raining and to go between houses (their dad and I are divorced)

leccybill · 29/08/2024 13:56

My DD got a maxi scooter (3 wheels) for her 7th birthday and enjoyed it until she was 10. So don't worry!

2025mama · 29/08/2024 13:57

Our dc who is nearly 9 still enjoys the 3 wheels scooter as do many others in the same class. Just let him enjoy his scooter please

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 29/08/2024 13:58

My dd was still on her Princess scooter at that age, I think you're overthinking it tbh.

Peppard Pig made my day, thank you

My child is exactly the same age (6 in October). They can ride a bike without stabilisers as can most of their friends. But I don’t think they would make fun of a friend with a three wheel scooter. I don’t think they would realise that 3 wheels was ‘easier’ than two.

RedHelenB · 29/08/2024 14:01

I think it depends. 2 wheel scooters with my dc when they were at school ( and before that too) and I don’t remember anyone who wasn't. However, most of the answers say different. I don't think there'd have been any teasing though , the dc wouldn't care about 2/3 wheels.

Lifelessordinary1 · 29/08/2024 14:03

My Grandson is ND and has never learnt to ride a two wheeler bike and has a trike - we had the same worries that you have but when he was 11 or 12. However he is now 15 and his trike is the favorite thing for him and his friends to mess around on - they are all really jealous of it. Try not to anticipate problems that may not be there.

Thank you. I feel a bit better with those responses.

The pig that "loves it when a plan comes together".

DS11 has dyspraxia and a bundle load of other issues, awaiting assessment from nd team. He has had his 3 wheeler for years and the school do Scoot to School Fridays. It's only this year (end of Y5 due to delayed start) that he's said anything about it - apparently he's had some children calling it babyish. He promptly received a two-wheeler for a birthday present and is much happier. So your son should be fine for a while yet. Just keep your ears open!

And not that anyone else except us cares, ds has today ridden a bike minus stabilisers for the very first time - a wobbly ten metres but still! Yay!!! Never thought he'd manage that!

GoogolB · 29/08/2024 19:55

If your kid wants to use it, of course he should! Don’t teach him that other people’s opinions should stop him having fun.

Sunpiercer · 29/08/2024 19:58

My son rode his to school last year (Y2) and nobody batted an eyelid. He does have a 2 wheeler now, took him a while to get used to it - he got it for Christmas but didn’t properly attempt it for a few months. He’s also only learnt to ride a bike in the last 4 months and not naturally a sporty kid. He’s never had anyone taking the piss so I hope your DS doesn’t either.

Preo · 29/08/2024 19:59

It looks fine, as others have said if it had a character on it might be seen as a bit youngish but for the age and the scooter I think you’re overthinking

NuffSaidSam · 29/08/2024 20:00

Nearly seven year old here and he has a three wheeler and enjoys it. His friends have a mix of two/three wheelers but I have never noticed any comments about who has which type or scooter.

If his friends pick on him because of the type of scooter he has he'd be better off making new friends rather than getting a new scooter.

My sons that age don't/didn't really care about being made fun of about stuff like that. They had "girl" bikes handed down from their sister and just rode them hard like motocross bikes. Surely in a couple more years that will all be an issue.

HealthyHopefulHappy · 29/08/2024 20:19

My 9 year old has a 3 wheel scooter. He does have motor skills issues. No child has ever said anything negative about it
