To be sick of 'quick turnaround' holiday cottages and their half arsed cleaning

Hi,

Just wondered if anyone else was feeling this.

Got back yesterday from a few days away in a holiday cottage, but once again was left feeling pissed off at the level of cleanliness and general lack of facilities. This time was probably the worst, as the dishwasher didn't work, there was mould in the washing machine and there was absolutely nothing in terms of household essentials. I.e, butter, oil, dishcloths, toilet roll, milk - absolutely nothing. It just seems so bloody stingy! We paid good money because it's a popular area, but we still expect the basic levels of cleanliness at the very least!

I wouldn't expect biscuits and wine on arrival (although that didn't used to be unusual!) and I'd forgive a bit of dust here and there, but this just seems thoughtless and greedy.

Definitely seems to be becoming the norm now unfortunately. The last thing I want is to start the process of an official complaint, but I feel utterly ripped off, so I will.

I know I'm not being unreasonable to feel this way under the circumstances. I guess I just wondered if anyone else felt like this or have we just been really unlucky? ....

My friend runs an Airbnb. As soon as she's finished cleaning she texts the guests to say it's ready for use.

To be fair I gave her a lift there one day. We arrived at 10 AM. The guests were still in bed bar one. I pretended to be the cleaner. Took me over an hour to get them out. After three nights the place was a tip. Three young couples. OMG the mess they left. Not a clean plate in the place, takeaway containers everywhere, both bathrooms a mess of skidmarks in the loo, broken shower, filthy bath, make up stains on bedding, carpet and dressing table.

They were fined and paid because friend sent the pictures to Airbnb.

It took four hours to clean it all up.

In one st the moment which clearly has lovely hosts but shit cleaners - great welcome pack (local apple juice, tea bags, ground coffee, biscuits, crackers and fudge), plentiful dishwasher tablets, beautifully presented - and then dust and cobwebs everywhere, hair in the bath plug, cupboards full of stuff people have left over the years (two half full bottles of out of date squash, a half eaten jar of mint sauce that went off in 2021, etc - yuck)

Nope if the hosts haven't checked it since 2021 re jars it's all on them not the cleaners.

Honestly people only book with super hosts. If you wind up in a shitty place. Threaten owners with twitter, Instagram, Airbnb, local tourist office film, name and shame.

Just to reply to a previous poster,
For my Guests I leave wine, biscuits, tea bags instant coffee, ground coffee, milk(I request their preference) dog treats, Fresh fruit, fresh flowers, Orange or Apple juice, large jar marmalade.
sundries include all possible cleaning products, toilet rolls Aluminium Foil, sandwich bags, cling film, sandwich Tupperware boxes, cooking oil, kitchen roll, hand soap, toiletries, dusters, dish cloths, Washing Powder and Fabric Conditioner, unlimited Dishwasher tabs.
In fact, I like to think that my guests only need to shop for their food and not have to bring much with them. It’s probably more than most places do but I like to do my best to give them a home to walk into. I also leave at least a full day and one night between bookings so that beds are aired and the place gets a deep clean. Covid has made me go over kill eg I wipe down all handles and door knobs too.
I am a little OCD when it comes to cleaning but my guests have noticed and commented on the cleanliness of the cottage. When ever I stay somewhere, if it’s not clean, or there is dust on the skirting boards, I don’t feel comfortable. I remember an episode of Doc Martin when the first thing he did when checking into a hotel was to check the bedding and mattress for bed bugs! I would do this too if I felt the place wasn’t clean.

My guests are also offered a later check out if they are happy to strip the beds. They always do this except for once when a language barrier where they might have misunderstood ‘ stripping’!
I can do this only because I never have back to back bookings and make sure that there is at least 24 hours between bookings.
