Hi,

I am looking to change direction as soon as DS starts Reception, which is a couple of years away as he is still a toddler.

Previously, I worked as an EFL teacher abroad, a nanny, a teaching assistant and most recently, a Finance/ Accounts Assistant.

Out of all careers, I enjoyed Accounting because I felt respected and was left alone to get on with the work on my own and I listened to podcasts while working at home and doing the work on autopilot (because I had mastered it quickly enough).

The problem is that it doesn't pay well - my salary was £24k before I quit the job to have a baby. Some of my senior Accounting colleagues were regularly working 9-7 when it was supposed to be a 9-5 job and they would have lunch at their desk whilst working and sometimes take work home. I don't want that for myself. I want to earn better money and not have to work such long hours.

I had the idea of paying £5-10k to buy a cleaning franchise and start earning serious money like £50-100k - I need to buy a house for DS and me and provide for his future like university costs and a small deposit for a property.

Am I being unreasonable in asking you lovely ladies to help me brainstorm career or business ideas that are much easier to succeed in and earn well in?

Being on a low income (Universal Credit) and eating into my savings (now under £5k), I feel really poor and have had a glimpse into what retirement would look like. I feel like time in running out, I am 39 and single. I probably have 20 years of work ahead of me and want to earn the most I have ever earned and work as intensely for as long as I can to provide a good life for DS and to save for retirement. Also, it would be nice to go on holidays, wear nice clothes and eat good food.

TL;DR: I want to do really well in life, financially speaking, but don't know where to begin. Is there a job, career or business that would enable me to get there? It doesn't matter if it's boring or involves some manual labour.

Thanks x

Have you got a finance qualification? I work in finance and earn in the range of what you quote, but I had to have some qualifications in it to get that far.

A cleaning franchise means making money for someone else- could you set up your own? Maybe look at decluttering etc too which is higher pay per hour?
Try the careers service or look at https://www.16personalities.com to give you some ideas based on your personality.
There may be local support via the council to set up your business.
Look on fb/ next door etc to see what is in demand locally.

As for career advice i would look for jobs which allow the lifestyle you want and what you are good at vs other people(not necessarily what you're interested in, as that changes)
