DH has been diagnosed with bowel cancer.

He has to have a stoma before treatment can begin.
We have been told to go to the hospital A & E dept today and wait for the doctor to collect us.

Surgery scheduled for tomorrow.
They have told us they do not know how long we will wait in A &E.

So we have to sit there, with people that may have infections, covid etc before a major op.

Am I unreasonable to think this is crazy? Not sure what we can do? It just doesn't seem right.

Covid masks?

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 29/08/2024 11:43

YANBU

Always the worst thing about being in A and E, even worse than the endless waiting, the worry that you’re sat next to someone who’s there she to an infectious illness.

VickyEadieofThigh · 29/08/2024 11:43

I've never heard of waiting in A & E for a doctor to collect a person waiting for surgery. You'd wait, if it's a day procedure, in the relevant department, surely?

FatmanandKnobbin · 29/08/2024 11:45

If its a massive concern then he could always wear a mask while in A&E, but the very nature if a hospital means even if he was waiting on a ward he would encounter poorly people.

I totally understand its a scary and unpredictable time for you right now, sometimes we find it easier to focus on small details rather than face the main thing.

I hope all goes well, make sure to look after yourself too op 💐

Can you try and ring the consultant's secretary to gain some clarity?

Sirzy · 29/08/2024 11:46

I have never heard that how odd! I presume he is going to be in for a week or two post surgery to?
hope it all goes well

LemonWater222 · 29/08/2024 12:02

We have questioned it and they said that is just the procedure we have to take.

Just crazy isn't it. I will take masks and will wait with him. Hopefully won't be too long.

If they've asked him to wait in A&E, I'm guessing there is a reason for that, like work being done that's put the usual waiting place out of action or something. Trust me, no hospital wants more people sitting in A&E unless it's entirely necessary, so I suspect this is a last resort on their part.

I do understand your concerns, but he would be with other people wherever he was waiting, and most people in A&E probably won't have anything infectious. So yeah, as others have said, maybe wear a mask, take hand sanitiser etc, but try not to worry too much.

Hope his procedure goes well, even if the wait isn't ideal, and best of luck for his treatment Flowers

I’ve never heard of things being done like this, as @KreedKafer suggests there must be some reason for it? But it’s odd that they wouldn’t just clarify what’s going on for you. I don’t know why a doctor would ‘collect’ you when you’re scheduled for a surgery tomorrow.

Maybe the person on the phone has explained it poorly? Maybe he’ll get bloods done in A&E which will be sent to doctor to review, and a nurse or porter will move him to the ward when a bed is ready? Or he might spend the night in A&E before the op?

Very annoying not knowing!

SparklyLimeJoker · 29/08/2024 12:23

My DD had this. She was to come to hospital the day before her surgery and she would be collected from A&E. She was there for 5 hours.

LemonWater222 · 31/08/2024 10:11

Just an update and request for advice please?

We sat in A&E from 5pm until he was taken to the ward at 12pm.
Surgery scheduled for yesterday but didn't happen.

He is on a surgical waiting ward, on a trolley not a proper bed, hasn't slept hardly.

The problem is that emergencies keep coming in so his procedure is being put back.
It is now a week since he should have had his surgery.
We do have private health but were told to stick with NHS as he was in the system and would be quicker!

He was first diagnosed on 22 July with a 5cm tumour that had perforated the bowel.

Not sure what to do? Don't think I can do anything but just wanted to rant
