Hi everyone,

I'm looking for some advice. I've had about five or six recurrent miscarriages, and I'm currently pregnant again 7 weeks. My private doctor has advised me to have weekly scans. Since the clinic is a three-hour trip each way, they've suggested I come in fortnightly and go to the NHS or a local clinic on alternate weeks.

The problem is, each trip to the private clinic costs £800-£1000. They say these frequent visits are necessary to ensure they don't need to change my course of medication.

Does this sound like I'm being taken advantage of? Or is this level of monitoring standard for someone with a history of recurrent miscarriages?

Sounds like they are maximising their revenue. It's your choice whether to follow their advice. You won't get an NHS scan when you want, only when they let you.

@DragonGypsyDoris I've managed to get NHS one today at 7 weeks, another next week and another at ten weeks due to my history of miscarriages

I would call your NHS midwife to get their opinion, are you under consultant-lead care? What medication are they prescribing you?

notaurewhatusername · 28/08/2024 20:56

@Dotto no I'm not under consultant lead care just the early pregnancy unit and also Tommys.

The private clinic have given me quite a bit; intrilipid drips monthly, omeprozole, pendisolone (steroids), progesterone and fragmin

I was referred to a consultant by the midwife and had weekly scans, sometimes twice weekly for monitoring. I was extremely high risk. I did get there-ish in the end just had a very early baby. Both of us are fine.
if you can ask your midwife to refer you and pass on your medical information from the clinic your originally started with. Hopefully you’ll be given a care plan and dates for review with the consultant with scans weekly as suggested.

Good luck x

@Disabledmomma do you mind me asking why you were high risk? Did you suffer miscarriages?

I've had 11 miscarriages and was never suggested to do this?

Weekly scans unfortunately won't change anything, it's just a reassurance thing for yourself so yes they're making money out of you needlessly.

notaurewhatusername · 28/08/2024 21:13

@Wwyd2025 thank you.

I asked them if I get my own scans locally and send them will this be sufficient to which they replied it's better if they scan ass they know what they're looking for and the quality of the scan is the quality of the sonographer. What they see may mean a change to the course of meds

I think this is rubbish
