To not have an air fryer?

I'm not convinced I need one but everyone seems to be so passionate about how great they are.

Are people just using them like a little oven do they don't have to heat the whole oven every time they want to cook something?

I can't work out what I am missing.

I don't use mine to its full capacity but it's handy, mine has shelves instead of drawers

Live alone and it's handy for reheating pizza, part baked bread, halloumi, bacon, sausages, chips

MostRidiculousDilemmaOfModernParenting · 29/08/2024 10:16

How easy is it to clean?

I'm tempted but we rarely use the oven to cook and don't really deep fry stuff. Is it still useful?

Cantthinkofonenow · 29/08/2024 10:19

I’ve hardly used my oven since owning one I love them

Stick the inside of the drawers in the dishwasher and wipe the drawers themselves. No more hassle than cleaning a pot.

Sameshitdifferentdayx · 29/08/2024 10:26

Not hard to clean at all.
We love our air fryer, lots quicker and cheaper. Barely use the oven now, only the hob if needed. Only time we use the oven is to cook a pizza or something that wouldn't otherwise fit in the air fryer!

I think if you have small DC then they're good for heating up kids freezer food like nuggets and chips etc

They are good for so much more than that.

What though

Stirmish · 29/08/2024 10:30

What are people actually cooking in their air fryers that's not freezer food

Part baked bread
Cheese on toast
Any meat
Roasted veg
I do chopped up potatoes, into little cubes

Anything you would cook in an oven, it's a mini fast fan oven that doesn't need preheating

Loads of recipes here

I roast a whole chicken!

Also do whole fish fillets, jacket potatoes, roast veg, homemade roasted chickpea snack, fajitas filling etc

I cook everything that I used to use the oven for
Roasts, steaks, fish, chicken, lasagne, pies, cakes, bread - you name it

Yeah there are daft beggers who "boil" eggs and heat soup up in them but really why would you when the hob or micro is better for those

Have you read the thread? I did say plenty of food ideas earlier that aren't freezer stuff.

GasPanic · 29/08/2024 13:57

I think they are good, but if you are really into cooking and prefer stuff like stews better to get one of the all in one things like ninja Foodie rather than just an air fryer.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 29/08/2024 14:22

I haven't got one and can't see what I'd use it for? I don't eat fried food. I cook very simple meals. Nothing I do takes longer than 20 minutes... so in a small kitchen I can't really see the benefit of cluttering up the workspace even more. And the thoughts of cleaning out those drawers makes me shudder! (I don't have a dishwasher either.)

MzPixie · 29/08/2024 14:27

I don't have one at all yes their cheaper to run but I just don't think I need one

Stirmish · 29/08/2024 18:00

Thanks @suki1964 so pretty much lots of food I'd cook

@marshmallowfinder not thanking you and yes I've read the full thread but wasn't interested in the kinds of food mentioned if that's all the sane to you

Stirmish · 29/08/2024 18:01

@Scottishskifun and @spikeandbuffy24

Thanking you both too

Again food I would definitely cook

Stirmish · 29/08/2024 18:02

I've been so close to buying one so many times

BeaRF75 · 29/08/2024 18:05

Well, I've never had a microwave - nor felt the need for one. So I can safely say that the air fryer trend will be passing me by...... 😂

Lemonade2011 · 29/08/2024 18:07

I’ve had one for years, it’s great I use it a lot - i got it because the oven went poof in my house and it took the landlord an age to fit a new one. How in my new house the oven has gone poof, I can still use the hob and Grill so the ninja does anything that goes in the oven.
we will need a new cooker but the one I want is £ so hanging off till I can afford it. Only think I can’t cook is pizza. Did a chicken in it the other day then made soup with stock and leftovers.

BobbyBiscuits · 29/08/2024 18:14

I don't really have the space for one. I've already got a juicer and a magimix that can't fit in cupboards! I have this weird thing about them where I get worried....
Like that it's a cynical way for estate agents and landlords to phase out the notion of a kitchen being an essential part of a home fjr one or two people. Like, oh it's got an air fryer. There's something that worries me about that, haha! Totally irrational. I know!

As Ive said up thread, I actually have 2, the dual drawer and the 15 in 1. Both I use regularly, indeed there is not a meal cooked here where one or the other is not in use - sometimes both

I cook 95% of meals from scratch, yes we do sometimes have a beige tea of fish fingers or battered/breaded crumbed fish - and yes they come out beautifully , but usually its those typical family meals that we all cook. Im totally disorganised most days and can be in work and think hell, forgot to get whatever out of the freezer - not a bother. Get home, pull the mince out the freezer, into the 15 in 1 to saute and brown ( as its defrosting ) , add the garlic, herbs, veg, tomatoes and stock, switch to pressure cook and within 30 mins of walking in the door - a bolognaise made and tasting like its had a good long slow cook

Have the chicken out and I can have the roast dinner on the table in just over the hour - using just one pot - steam roast the chicken on top of a bed of spuds and parsnips, when that's cooked - about 35 mins, tip it all out saving the juices for gravy, wipe the pot out ( quick rinse ) then in goes the cabbage and carrots - PC for three mins, that out and the parsnips and roasties back in for a final air fry to crisp whilst carving the chicken and making the gravy

I used the 15 in 1 and the dual drawer for the christmas dinner and OMG what a joy to get the turkey and gammon and all the hard veg cooked within 2 hours without the kitchen steaming up.

Im used to fast cooking, I used to be a chef in a very busy restaurant and am used to juggling at least two stations so for me its easy. Some people think the flaff of juggling and layering is just two complicated so dont get the full use.

I cook for 3, all with different wants and this way I can cater for all three without having to put the big oven on to do just one jacket spud for example

When I have a house full - oven gets used. No way am I doing a full Irish for 10 when the oven does it easier. Same for a roast for 10 - oven, but still using the air fryer PC function for the potatoes for mashing for example
