I recently got a pay rise from a deputy MD to MD postion, much earlier than expected. Boss told me to expect a ‘considerable’ pay increase. I got the letter today and it’s about 8% and after tax will equal about £300-400 extra a month.

More info/for reference:

I already had a 22% pay rise at the start of the year, though this followed a smaller one the previous year due to a merger.

although the promotion was earlier than expected, I have been doing the job for three months plus.

salary is at the lower end of the range for the role but within it.

salary is at least 10k less than the person I am taking over was on but he had been in the role for a number of years.

boss also told me I am one of the 2/3 people the business can’t do without and that my performance is exceptional etc

global company, with around 300 employees

so, AIBU?

yes, it’s a good salary, and is in line for the role

no, you’ve been led to expect more, this isn’t ’substantial’.

thanks all

Oh it’s own 8% doesn’t seem great, but 30% in a year is huge and I think it unlikely many places would offer anyone more than 30% payrise in a year for one promotion.

Didimum · 28/08/2024 07:36

Seems in line with your experience, OP.

Weezypopsy · 28/08/2024 07:39

Worth pointing out, I think I almost want to be told I’m being unreasonable!

Where in the range for your previous role , did the 22% raise put you? Had they been playing catch up because you were below range for deputy?

8% does not sound like a huge incentivising raise. Do you feel that you could talk to the boss and ask him how you can earn a bigger raise for the MD role in the next round of reviews?

Alternatively, is there a bonus scheme / share options etc which now kicks in as MD ?

At the top end of the role but only two of us in the company with that role so not much to compare it to.

there is a bonus scheme, yes, but i was entitled to this previously so no change there. Will likely be more as it’s a % of salary.

i have a 121 with my boss today so part of posting was to help solidify my thoughts on whether to mention. Am currently thinking I won’t but he he mentions it I’ll say grateful but a little disappointed.

Could you ask for the three months’ back pay?

What amount would you have been happy with?
I would certainly mention it. It's now or never with it being a new role/rise.

Imalongtimepostingmum · 28/08/2024 07:54

Ask yourself 'what would a man do'? and do that.

Good luck!

Weezypopsy · 28/08/2024 07:56

My boss mentioned back pay/ some sort of compensation for work done but that hasn’t been mentioned, so is something i should bring up. I do realise it’s now or never (or at least now or January!)

i had assumed it would be about 5k more than it is, based on what I know of others in similar roles, which would have been a 14% rise.

Haha yes, true!

I think it's fine to mention it. Don't say disappointed it sounds a bit sulky. I'd say due to xyz that you have been doing for past three months plus x years previous experience in dm role you thought the increase would look more like ££££. (Go with a reasonable figure) Are they willing to offer more? What do they want to see to get to top end range?

If they say no I'd look elsewhere where

NineToFiveish · 28/08/2024 08:04

In light of your previous pay increase earlier this year, I'm not sure I would feel comfortable asking for more in your shoes - but you know the situation better!

I've never been successful in substantially increasing my salary within the same organisation, I've always had to move jobs to get jumps in pay. In your position, I'd be keeping a close eye on the market value of my job title/description on LinkedIn, and plan to move jobs in the next 2 years or so after I've made an impact in the new role and had measurable outcomes to share in interviews.

ClockworkDisaster · 28/08/2024 08:06

You could ask him if there is scope to increase the salary year on year as you gain experience as you realise you were on the top of the previous pay scale and would like to know how long it takes to get to the top of this one?

IReallyCouldntThinkOfAUsername · 28/08/2024 08:23

It's within range and you've had a 30% increase recently. You're not going to be as experienced as the person leaving, and they won't have gone into that role on the £10k more that they left on. So YABU.

Weezypopsy · 28/08/2024 10:49

So I met with my boss earlier and the first thing he asked was how I felt about the pay. He said it was less than he’d hoped it would be as he was slightly constrained by me having had a 20%+ increase already but that i will be getting an increase of at least another 17-20% in January.

thanks for all your replies!

Good result ! Hold him to it 😀

Imalongtimepostingmum · 28/08/2024 14:26

Whoop, you go girl!

Weezypopsy · 28/08/2024 17:49

Thanks all, seems the votes state I am being unreasonable but it worked out anyway. 😀
