It just really irritates me… it’s just so smug.. if someone has something to say.. just say it…

Depends on how it's said, tone of voice, context, etc. I don't personally find it automatically smug, though it's also not something I hear very often.

I haven’t even heard anyone say it… but reading it on various forums (Facebook, Reddit, ahem, mumsnet) it’s just really irritates me

I see it as the verbal equivalent of a shrug. Come to think of it, I quite dislike the shrug 🤷‍♀️ emoticon

I agree. If you're saying that it means something, come out and say it. It seems to be used to insinuate something that would sound very shaky/batshit if you laid it out directly.

E.g. "your dh went to work and the first person he spoke to was the young female receptionist. Make of that what you will.........."
