My elderly parents have transferred over to fibre broadband and digital voice after being hounded by BT to do so. This means you get your phone line over broadband.

Since switch over, they can't get any incoming calls. The phone won't ring out at all. BT seem to think it isn't a big deal but my mum's disabled and most of her friends ring on the landline.

They have tried various phones, a BT (Openreach) engineer has come out to try and fix it, they've tried plugging it in to the router, to the new adapter etc. Still not working.

It's been 9 days. BT are are refusing to pay any compensation because they're providing a "part service".

AIBU to find this ridiculous?

Make a complaint and escalate it to their executive team. My very unwell ILs were without a phone for 3 weeks because of a fault caused by BT. I emailed the chief executive’s office and got swift results but minimal compensation. I found the email address online.

Definitely complain. They left my elderly mother with no phone line for days, having given her a few hours notice and insisting she transfer even though she is vulnerable. In the end they provided a back up battery and additional phone as a safety net,

Yes, they are paying the extra for the phone line. A person from BT is ringing them again on Wednesday to try and solve it.

Has someone checked that the ringer on the handset is actually switched on

Yes and they have tried multiple handsets to make doubly sure it's not a fault with the handset.

My elderly and disabled parents have been left without a landline for over 6 weeks now to BT’s incompetence. They were also part of this switch over. My father can’t use a mobile due to one of his disabilities. It’s a disgrace.

Andwegoroundagain · 26/08/2024 19:07

Are their handsets digital compatible? I had to buy a special adaptor to get mine old handsets to work with the VoiP line.

Do BT know they are vulnerable ? They should have a flag for that.
