Help! Grubby walls in hallway

Ihavenoclu · 26/08/2024 15:14

Not AIBU but posting for traffic. Please help. I have just got new glasses and oh lord my house is filthy! My hallway walls in particular are grim. Ultimately they need a repaint but I won't have the funds to do that for another year or so. In the meantime please help me with your best tips on how to clean marks on walls? I am desperate!

Wallpaper or paint?

PKNI · 26/08/2024 15:26

Try Flash magic sponges xx

CarrieHain · 26/08/2024 15:28

Put a dimmer light bulb in.

MammaTill2Pojkar · 26/08/2024 15:32

As suggested magic sponges if it is paint (I don't know if they work on wallpaper).

violetsparkle · 26/08/2024 15:34

Magic eraser sponges

CoastalCalm · 26/08/2024 15:35

A light wipe with a damp cloth and the magic sponges for any deeper ingrained marks

Balloonhearts · 26/08/2024 15:37

Use silk paint next time. Just wipes clean, no hassle.

WhatFlavourIsIt · 26/08/2024 16:10

Water with washing up liquid should do the job.

Ihavenoclu · 26/08/2024 23:12

Thank you so much everyone. Off to google magic sponges. It is paint and not wall paper. I need to tackle my carpets next. I can't believe I haven't seen all these stains. Awful!

Sugar soap is not expensive and very effective ( wear rubber gloves).

rayofsunshine86 · 26/08/2024 23:16

Sugar soap and a microfibre cloth 👍

OrwellianTimes · 26/08/2024 23:34

Sugar soap & gloves.

McGregor33 · 26/08/2024 23:35

I use my 360 spin mop with fairy liquid and some disinfectant ☺️ it brings it up great and I can chuck the mop head in the washing machine!

RogueFemale · 26/08/2024 23:39

Sugar soap. Magic erasers are only for spot cleaning, you can't do large areas. Get soluble sugar soap, dissolve it, and sponge down the walls with the solution.

TheClawDecides · 26/08/2024 23:40

The Vileda Turbo Mop is great for washing walls, as the spinny thing means you don't over wet them and the head goes flat against the wall.

Having said that, you'd be surprised how cheap good quality paint is and it goes a long way, so might not be as expensive to buy as you're thinking?

Shamelessly place marking Blush

Onthescrapheap81 · 26/08/2024 23:42

You can use magic sponges on large areas if you use enough of them! I had to do an end of tenancy clean on the most minging house imaginable, literally every wall and surface in the house was badly stained and I magic sponged it all, I’d have been there forever using anything else. The house looked amazing when we’d finished. You can buy them cheap on Amazon in big packs, don’t go buying them one at a time in a supermarket.

Copperoliverbear · 26/08/2024 23:48

Paint it yourself, maybe get some friends to help. X

Ihavenoclu · 30/08/2024 14:26

I tried magic sponges last night and oh my goodness I cant believe how much better it looks. Why did I not know about these things before? I will google the other tips too.

i can't paint it myself as there are settling cracks that need filling and the walls and ceilings are high and I am 5.2. I am saving up but it will take a while.

What can you afford now? Johnstone's paint is perfectly adequate and is £14/tin - a hallway probably wouldn't need more than one tin. £8 for an extendable roller so you can reach the top, £3 for a cutting-in brush (I stand on a chair to reach the top for cutting in), £7 for filler and filling knife, £3 for sandpaper. YouTube for free tutorials on filling and painting. Job's a good'un!

I have a long haired German Shepherd and white walls. Plus OCD. I use magic erasers weekly. We recently had our house decorated and I like to keep on top of it. I bought a pen off Amazon which holds a tiny bit of paint that is perfect to cover the odd mark/scuff.

When I build our next house we will have wood panelling all downstairs.
