Want to leave work due to change of hours

I worked for Sainsburys for 17 years now. Firstly as a customer service assistant and past two years, shop floor and code checking. I help out on tills to cover breaks etc.

My store is small - not a Local. We do code checks as soon as delivery has finished. Usually around 10am. I do 7am-3pm four days a week

Now head office want us to start code checking at 3pm. I am refusing to change my hours as I fought for 10 years to get back to early shifts. Plus it’s not going to work. My store has a large elderly population and when it’s dark outside they don’t go in and it’s quiet in general. This model that Sainsburys suggesting will make us lose money and create more waste!

I want to leave Sainsburys as there’s no way I am being forced to work later shifts. None of the code checkers at my store are happy about this as they have commitments, look after elderly parents and one can’t get home on bus as last bus is 7:30pm and expect us to work til 8:30pm.

It’s part of the One Great Way thing that Sainsburys are implementing. More like One Great Way to make staff leave

Could you move to another store and look at inside move.

There's only a store manager role. Nowt else

@Klonc what is One Great Way please?

Speak to ACAS. If they can’t offer you an alternative role at the hours you’re working I suspect this is a redundancy situation. Would still mean you’d have to look for another job but at least you’d get a payout (one week for each full year, capped at about £600 per week I think )

Is this a local change or across the board? How much notice do they have to give for such a significant change to working pattern?

I would look for something else.

Sainsburys can change hours. Not just Sainsburys but any company can. They have to have consultations with staff affected and implement a 12 week process whereby staff will be told their hours are changing and basically like it or lump it. My partner worked for Sainsburys for 15 years as a night shift manager and in his store he lost his job as nightshift was being moved to twilight/early morning shifts.
Like any company they don't care about staff or customers, it's business and their aim is to make money and if they step on toes along the way so be it.
