Please do not judge firstly.
I am 41 and still live at home. I am Surrey based and single.
I work but don't earn enough to live independently in this area.
A few months back I visited Hartlepool for a wedding and really liked the area. Of course many would say it is run down but I love the beach, the marina and they have a shopping centre.
I have 70K which is my life's worth savings so could definitely be in a position to buy a 1 bed flat there. I have health issues and they have a hospital nearby also. I do a job which will never be made redundant (sorry to be cryptic but don't want to be outed) so no worries with finding work.
I would be alone but I need that. Family issues and being the scapegoat in the family has made me see I need a clean break and to rebuild my confidence.
Just wondered if anyone could provide any feedback.
Thanks in advance.

Hartlepool hospital isn't the best, OP. It's a small "branch" off north tees. If you have chronic health needs, I wouldn't consider it compared with facilities in the south.

CremeEggThief · 26/08/2024 19:12

Have you any local connections to the area, OP?

Parts of the North East are very, very insular. I'm tolerated and liked (by some anyway!😆)as an Irish person in my town in County Durham after several years, but I will never be truly accepted.

This is still a part of the world that is extremely tribal. It's crazy to try to fathom, but it's to the extent that the folk round my immediate area wouldn't want the folk from the estate on the other outskirts of the same town to know "our business". It really is "what goes on around here, stays around here."

Op have you checked that your condition can be managed with Hartlepool hospital? It's not fully operating so North Tees (20 minute away) is where we have to go for most things, but services such as ultrasound, musculoskeletal etc are operating from Hartlepool.

The riots happened all over the country, so no need to let that put you off, they're not a regular occurrence here.

Everyone on here will have their views - if you have visited, and like the area, and think you could be happy, take the plunge 😊All the best with your decision op

ChickenandaCanofCoke · 26/08/2024 19:15

Your Surrey accent will have you labelled "posh" in lots of towns. What was it about Hartlepool you liked? Could you visit the area for a week or two and then maybe the NW coast?

I do not recognise this as a description of my part of the North East or areas my friends have settled in here as well so I dont think that is a widespread problem.

What is your problem with Saltburn, did you have a bad experience there? 😆 It’s just a totally normal place 😅

So incredibly rude!

blessedarethequichemakers · 26/08/2024 19:29

Only experience of Hartlepool was taking someone to the hospital. Not a pleasant day. You could look at nice riverside one bedroom places around Gateshead for around 100k. Also near hospitals and close to Newcastle.

fuckssaaaaake · 26/08/2024 19:34

😂 this thread is hilarious. As if your opinion of a certain place means that it is definitely like that. A lot of this is opinion based. Sure, some places are known to be a little rough round the edges but to assume to nice little place like Saltburn is awful for clearly personal preference is ridiculous

Let me know if you come to Hartlepool op!! Lots of things to do. Dunelm I have to say have a nice cafe!!

52stillgothair · 26/08/2024 19:53

I grew up and lived in Marske (village between Redcar and Saltburn) for over 20 years before moving to Manchester and then Liverpool.

Hartlepool - don’t really know anything except it’s very run down
Saltburn - best of the bunch. It is welcoming, very much like a city, lots of things to do, great community, a pier, a funicular railway, nice independent shops and cafes, woods, Victorian gardens and a band stand
Redcar - needs improvement but has nice parts

YourSnugHazelTraybake · 26/08/2024 19:55

My 74 year old mother moved to Hartlepool a few years ago and loves it. She's at Seaton carew side and it's a lovely area , she's absolutely thriving. Very good shopping, lovely marina, the beaches are fantastic, and the transport links are excellent. It does have some deprived areas, but there's been a real surge of regeneration in the last few years. Like you op, it was the feel of the area that led the decision, and she's not regretted it for an instant.

Saltburn isn’t stuck up ha ha! It’s just nice town with welcoming people. It’s the only place I’d live if I ever moved back. Someone obviously has beef with Saltburn… was someone nice to you there once?

Mysinglepringle · 26/08/2024 19:59

Well the majority of it is really scummy. But there are nice areas. And yeah seaton carew is very very nice.

Lovelyview · 26/08/2024 20:00

I grew up in Saltburn and completely agree it's not what the op's looking for.

Lovelyview · 26/08/2024 20:06

Also people talking about a deposit. The op could easily afford to pay for a flat in Hartlepool with £70,000.

If you grew up in Saltburn, you would know Hartlepool is a pretty run down. I mean, even Redcar would be a better choice.

MaryShelley1818 · 26/08/2024 20:10

Hartlepool is no different to most areas, some very nice parts, and some run down areas.
Seaton Carew is lovely, we were there with the kids a couple of weeks ago, and going back at the weekend for our works day out.
Lots of facilities in Hartlepool, good transport links and easy to travel to beautiful Durham and other lovely areas.

I think people are just being friendly and taking the time to give other nearby places and options to check out the OP might not have been aware of.

Jollein · 26/08/2024 20:12

If you decide to look further afield than Hartlepool, I think Central Chester-le-Street is nice. It's not right on the coast but has a nice park, the high street is doing well (for a town High Street, not many are exactly thriving). Really good transport links, train station right in the town centre for easy access to Newcastle and Durham, lots of buses. Pubs are all doing well. Property definitely in your price range.

I think the op is perfectly aware that Hartlepool is a bit run down but she liked how it felt and it ticked some important boxes.
