Perfumes making business at home

Hi everyone, I’d appreciate your thoughts on something.

My husband recently started a home-based business making perfumes. He’s working with essential oils and alcohol, preparing everything in our spare bedroom. We have a 7-year-old, and I’m a bit worried about the safety of having these products around.

I’ve attached a photo of the ingredients from one of the essential oils he’s using.

He insists that my concerns are overblown and says I’m overreacting. Am I being unreasonable?

Essential oils come with child-proof lids, and you wouldn’t leave them lying around open because they’d evaporate. So YABU to worry about that.

However, your husband’s chances of building this into a viable business are slim to none. To make a profit he needs to factor in the cost of safety certificates (needed for each product), public liability insurance, packaging, energy costs and his own time as well as the cost of the ingredients, and the volume he’d have to produce and sell, and the amount he’d have to charge, make it non-viable for a small producer.

We have locks on some of our rooms so if you were worried about your DC getting into products maybe a lock would help. Also have you declared this on your home insurance?

Kindly he is wasting time and money. I’ve known a few friends try to make money selling dupes. It never took off. People want to buy the smell and brand they like/desire.
not a smell concocted in Dave’s spare room.

I agree with you all that this is not a viable business. I just don’t have any energy to argue with him. For now, I just have the safety concerns

Do you need a licence or health and safety check/certificate?

If you have a mortgage are you allowed to conduct a business from home?

Does your household insurance cover running a business?

I didn't think you could just start vin o ting potions in your spare room without the approval of some kind of regulations?

Has he done any training? I did a natural perfume course to make my own, personal use not a business, and it is much harder than it looks?

I distill essential oils and I do not do in in the house and had to get inspected by local council as the still can explode. I don’t live in uk but I would think there’s might be similar rules?
