Post on a Sunday afternoon?

HotChocWine · 26/08/2024 03:59

We had post at 4pm yesterday
It's bothering me
DH was a postman for 10 years and they only ever did Sunday letter delivery in December
Why has post on a Sunday made me irritable?

I am surprised. Though if it means the Royal Mail are making an effort to clear a backlog, and postal workers are being rewarded well, then good.

Though I wish that those sub-postmasters owed compensation and justice would get it as quickly (most of the wrongful convictions were when the post office was part of Royal Mail).

TickingAlongNicely · 26/08/2024 07:25

We got a parcel from Royal Mail yesterday. We were expecting it due to tracking.

Maybe poor guy was doing overtime due to other staff being off ill? Or on summer holiday?

Bluestar23 · 26/08/2024 07:26

My husband is a postman and they are now working on Sundays.
At his office it's on a volunteer basis as overtime and they're usually just delivering parcels. But I imagine in other places I'm sure they'd deliver letters too.
Lots of rounds are going undelivered due to cutbacks and parcels are prioritised over letters.
In my personal opinion Royal Mail is in a bit of a mess as the managers are paying lots of overtime to try and get the job done and it never feels like a good use of funds.

It was delivered by someone not in uniform
And it sent the stupid dog into a barking fit

@HotChocWine

it was probably incorrectly delivered & the other person just dropped it around to save it going back through the postal service.

presuming you're in the U.K. it really isn't worthy of worrying about at 4am

what's really bothering you ??

After reading your OP I was thinking it was probably a neighbour who'd got some of your post by mistake, and Sunday afternoon was the first chance they'd had to pop it round. The fact the person who delivered it wasn't in uniform would fit in with that, as would the fact that some of it was late.

@ThatOneUncomfortableEyelash

what you said!! Sorry, I'd only got to the OP's post before yours when I replied.

HamBagelNoCheese · 26/08/2024 07:34

We have Sunday deliveries around here occasionally, usually when there's been a backlog during the week (sickness etc.) that they need to clear, they're offered voluntary overtime (according to the postie I saw last Sunday!)

SummerSplashing · 26/08/2024 08:08

@HotChocWine

i went away Saturday morning (about 10am) & got back yesterday afternoon (about 2pm) and there was a bill there, so I don't know if it was delivered Sat or Sun. Even though it was a bill I was still pleased to see it because our mail is so sporadic at the moment, but it shows there is still mail getting through.

i dog sit for my friend quite a lot & their big chocolate lab doesn't bark at anything really, but last time I dog sat, I also had her sisters dog (red lab) and he barks at everything!! They get a lot of leaflets, posts & deliveries. You have to go and pick it up straight away. As at home, he's allowed to chew it up🙄

I was up & down like a bloody yo yo!! (open plan so no way to shut doors to keep post safe.

then there were the squirrels 🐿️ out to taunt him!!

but I'm concerned for you that this has caused you so much upset, do you think you need to talk to someone? Your reaction is really extreme.

even with an dog (not puppy) teaching them not to back at the post really isn't difficult for most dogs, you might find that generally helpful too.

We were enjoying a quiet afternoon, I was content doing my diamond art, and the interruption, and the post delivery just threw me

This is peak MN, upset and disturbed by some mail through the door??
Is no one allowed to come to
your door without previous notice?
Taking precious to new levels.

I really can't believe some of the things I read on MN. New levels indeed.

How some people navigate life is a mystery to me when I read this sort of thing.

DappledThings · 26/08/2024 08:41

We get stuff through the door all the time. Leaflets, village newsletter, not just actual post.

This can't be real that someone would be so disturbed.

And don’t forget the diamond art! 😁

laurwalsh · 26/08/2024 08:45

I feel irked about Sundays morphing into Saturdays if I'm honest too. I would love to keep Sundays free for mass in the morning, chill, housework catch up, a relaxed Sunday roast. Now it's kids parties, activities, sports 😢

Bluevelvetsofa · 26/08/2024 09:05

I think it’s because we aren’t used to receiving post on Sundays and the fact that, currently, days and weeks can go by without any post coming through the door, so something arriving on the one day you don’t expect it, is unusual.

I agree that it’s ridiculous that posties are doing overtime because the post isn’t getting delivered otherwise, when employing more people would provide a more efficient and cost effective service.

If parcels are prioritised over letters, there will be important deadlines that are missed, such as hospital and other appointments, maybe contracts and formal documents, let alone post that isn’t vital, but important for a number of reasons. The birthday card I sent my grandson last year, a week early, arrived three weeks late and the previous year’s one, also arrived late and damaged.

OP is going to absolutely blow her mind when she finds out about this new company called Amazon.

😂

That's not really fair on your dog or the postperson

As I've already said

Oh, and my dog has always barked at the letter box

Are you non-neurotypical? I am wondering if you like your days to be strictly structured and the delivery of the post has disrupted this structure. If so I can possibly understand your reaction.

BetterCare · 26/08/2024 09:16

I am completely with you. I like days when the world is a little more shut down and you can maybe step away, just a little bit, from day to day life. Some of the items that may come through the post might add to your list of things to do that you don't want to think about on a Sunday.

I suspect you are little like me where you open the post immediately and some of it may play on your mind. I have some crazy friends who can put it to one side and not think about it until the next working day. I do not understand that madness. That is not me.

Particularly on a Bank Holiday. I like when the post is delivered on Saturday and I know I get peace from it until Tuesday.

You are getting a little bit of stick but I fully understand where you are coming from. You have non post day friend in me.

HolyPeaches · 26/08/2024 09:21

Someone knocking on your door delivering post and your dog barking has ruined a day?

Christ alive, how do you get through life?
