Aibu to not want to move up north

time2changeCharlieBrown · 25/08/2024 21:02

My dh has been offered a great job opportunity a high payrise
the catch is we have to relocate up north near Leeds
so my main concerns is the weather
I hate winter, rain and snow and up there seems to get more?
also I joined a few online community groups recently to get a feel for it and learn about the areas and what’s around
all I have mainly seen is awful things about robbery’s and car theft and violent crimes! It’s really putting me off!
we have a son who is not too far off an age to go clubbing and for nights out and even though he is 6 foot 5 he’s very striking looking mixed race (Greek) and I worry about him being a target and our eldest daughter too also very striking ,but both quite naive as we currently live in a small village and don’t often go into big cities and they are at small schools.
my dh is from a different town up north not too far from Leeds still has friends there and says it’s fine and all city’s are the same and the kids will be fine as not in any gangs and unlikely to be. I am a worrier so Aibu to not want to move?

I can't say I noticed it being significantly wetter when we moved to Leeds, but having grown up in London, the lack of horrible muggy heat in the summer was wonderful! Not quite so hot, but fresher, and summer isn't any shorter.

This. ^ London heat from mid May to mid September is gruesome. Always so muggy and humid! Give me the Midlands and The North any day!

I currently live in Kent but am heading up to the north east next year. Before I chose where to move to I checked an average rainfall map. Near the east coast it's much the same rainfall as down here. If you go west, it gets much wetter. I have also been tracking the weather up there since last November and I am content that it's not so different - just a few degrees cooler. Hope that helps x

Rummly · 25/08/2024 21:31

Oh Lordy, don’t go north. The school buses are armoured cars. The shops are all trestle tables outside shacks. The pubs and clubs are like the saloon and bawdy house in Gunfight At The OK Corral. And the weather is Siberian.

Is is actually working in Leeds city centre? Many of the villages are really lovely.

As a Leeds (train) commuter from a village, I don’t worry about crime in the slightest. Do get a bit wet on occasion.

I think you need to have a look at some prospective houses in your budget/ towns/ villages before you make your judgement. Had he got anywhere in particular in mind - maybe some of us can lay your mind to rest?

Yes it’s city centre but won’t have to go in every day and will be travelling around a bit to other places in Yorkshire but mainly Leeds and the centre at least twice a week

he’s mentioned looking at kirkstall, roundhay, headingly, and garforth that I can remember
I think he thought it would be good areas to commute from and also for the kids
so we plan to see some of those places when we go

You’ll be fine. Admittedly the wooden clogs did take some getting used to when I moved, and it was odd that every dog was a whippet. You just need to work out strategies to address the differences - for example, I tackled my concerns about the outside toilet by getting a chamber pot.

Don’t forget how hard it is to peg out the washing on lines strung across the street. Or pedal up the hill to buy a loaf of Hovis …

Seriously, OP- we are pretty normal up here in the North. I have family and friends between Leeds and Harrogate, and while I prefer Liverpool where I live now, Yorkshire is a great place.

I don’t really understand a word of that
too much rum? Maybe I need a few before I can de code it

Where do you live at the moment?

Yes, the weather is grim, let's face it

I'm from the north West originally, came home for two weeks in June this summer and was shocked at how crap the weather was. 12 degrees and raining, almost every day

Really bleak.

South west

yes this is my worry my husband has friends and family up north near Manchester and they are always complaining it’s cold and raining

If he doesn't have to be in the office full time do you HAVE to relocate?!

Can he not commute up a couple of days per week?

Do you work, will this affect your career?

I was being facetious. The north of England is as beautiful, well looked-after, sophisticated, law abiding and cheerful as any other part of the country. IME it’s also friendlier and more generous than the south too.

Rummly · 25/08/2024 21:38

But I think you knew what I was saying really, didn’t you.

Underthesinkk · 25/08/2024 21:39

Is the weather in Leeds known for being grim? I'm in Sheffield and it's fine. Considerably better than where I used to live in fact. Manchester is known for being wet but that's to do with being further west - I wasn't aware Leeds shared the same reputation.

Asosbabe · 25/08/2024 21:39

It's a much nicer life up there apart from the weather. Everything else you're worrying about things that are no worse than there than down south

No33 · 25/08/2024 21:41

My daughter is off to uni in Leeds, she's 18 and will be alone.

What part of the north west though? I live on the coast in Cumbria and we didn't have weather like that here at all. Just like you can't generalise about The North, you can't generalise about the North West.

Commonsenseisnotsocommon · 25/08/2024 21:41

Op, with kindness, you are coming across as very small minded indeed. Maybe stay in the south, Northerners really cannot stand southerners with a chip on their shoulder moving up begrudgingly. Oh and look at the crime rates for London, think you'll find it's not so wonderful after all.

Sorry I didn’t mean it like that
he has to go in to the office minimum twice a week but will probably be more plus he will be doing visits and meetings to other places within Yorkshire on most of the other days so makes sense to be up there as days can be long also.
i do work, but home based luckily so I can work from anywhere a lot easier

I think you might be better suited to Harrogate or York, yes the climate is on the cooler side than the south east, but not as wet as Cumbria or Lancashire. ( I say this as a Yorkshire lass).

Fangisnotacoward · 25/08/2024 21:42

It's Leeds, not the cartel controlled depths of Bolivia.
Plenty of nice villages in west and north Yorkshire that will be commutable to Leeds. Plus you'll get a lot more house for your money.

Yes, the weather can be a bit crappy at times. But, at least you can enjoy a bit of proper snow (and proper gravy! 😁)

That’s the north west, famed for being rainy across the Pennines. I travel regularly over those hills, and Yorkshire is definitely dryer. It is slightly colder than the south, but we get slightly longer summer days to make up for it!

OP what sort of village / town would you like to live in? Maybe some locals can help you out - give us a wish list!

alwaysmovingforwards · 25/08/2024 21:42

I often go to the north, most people are lovely and some nice places to visit.
Honestly though, I wouldn’t relocate there personally.

Isobel201 · 25/08/2024 21:43

I haven't seen proper snow in West Yorkshire since 2018, we get mild winters now really. I've worked in Bradford and Leeds.

ahandlerofgoods · 25/08/2024 21:45

Leeds is a decent sized city with a population of 800,000 people, there are 6 universities including Leeds Arts University and a Conservatoire. Of course there is crime, it is a city just like all other cities but you don't have to live in Leeds city, you can live outside of it. There are beautiful villages you just have to ask and we can help you but you came into this with your nose firmly in the air with your snobby attitude to a place some of us call home. I am not from Leeds but live on the outskirts and I love it.

If your Dh does decide to commute in then this train map may help plus ask on here how a commute in is as some are better than others. Commuting by car brings its own problems and it all depends on which side of the city he will be working on. No point telling you about beautiful areas if he needs to be on the other side of Leeds city for work.

Depending on your budget and housing needs there are some spectacular countryside village locations but we need to be guided by you. And Northerners are known to be a friendly bunch.
