Was looking forward to a fun night out but 20% on rotten tomatoes!

I think reviews these days need to be taken with a pinch of salt.

Especially films like this that can have a cult following.

What might be a decent film to a random movie goer is rubbish to someone who's big into the fandoms and expectations are based on comic books, previous versions of the films and years of waiting.

Basically you don't know if any film at the cinema will be personally enjoyable for you until you've seen it!

Sethera · 23/08/2024 22:53

I loved the original film back in the 90s. I tried watching it again a couple of years ago, and it had completely lost its magic, didn't even finish it. For that reason I wouldn't want to see the remake, I would rather remember enjoying it when I was in my romantic 20s with goth pretensions.

Thanks. Discovered the tickets are non refundable so guess we're going 🤣

Please tell us what you think of it after you've seen it. I'm curious!

LoquaciousPineapple · 24/08/2024 07:22

I think film critics and casual audiences are looking for different things when it comes to films like this. I'm going for the action and the visuals. As long as the plot is engaging and the actors are minimum level competent, I'm going to be happy enough.

It's like if the critics pan Wicked, I'll still go and see it. In that case, I'm not really going for the story and acting but for the music and the visual effects.

I only care about critic's opinions if they're saying it's offensive (eg sexist, racist etc), if it doesn't tick the boxes at all for the genre (eg a comedy that's not funny at all, a romance with no chemistry) or it's a serious film done very badly.

It looks pretty awful, but sometimes awful can be fun so who knows?

I found the snark in The Guardian review to be pretty funny:

  • [Draven is] shown to us as dark and brooding because he does drugs and has tattoos. He meets Shelly… they bond over both doing drugs and having tattoos and then escape to the city where they fall in deeper love by the power of montage
LyndaSnellsSniff · 24/08/2024 07:39

I tend not to listen to critics and make up my own mind. I love going to the cinema and will see anything that interests me (helps that tickets are only £5 here).

DH on the other hand, will dismiss a film based on reviews. Therefore, we rarely go together.🤷🏻‍♀️

I'll go and see most things, particularly love cheesy horror films with low review scores, but I have a Limitless card so I've seen about 4 versions of the trailer for this and the trailer looks worse every time.
Critics can be wrong but this has been in development hell since 2008 and is being dropped in a traditionally low-box office weekend which I think says that the studio/distributor also knows it's a turd.

Hopefully you can find positives! I do love Skarsgard.

justinhawkinsnavalfluff · 24/08/2024 08:24

I have no idea why they needed to remake a perfectly good film. Sorry OP but i imagine it will be crap. Make sure you take nice snacks to compensate. 🤷‍♀️

OptimismvsRealism · 24/08/2024 23:49

I quite liked it! Bollocks to the reviewers!
