Two fatal dog attacks in 48 hours

There have been two fatal dog attacks within 48 hours:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c80egr50vmmo

"Police are urgently hunting two dogs they believe were involved in killing a man found dead outside a home in Birmingham.

The man, aged 33, was found dead in the back garden of a home in Rubery on Wednesday.

Police said two dogs had been seized but they were hunting two more American bulldog types."

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/clyn4yxm7jko

A man who tried to fight off an XL bully with a broom as it mauled his friend to death has said the dog "just turned on him".

David Daintree died after his pet attacked him at his home on Ashley Court in Accrington, Lancashire, at about 21:30 BST on Tuesday.

I think it's time for a cull of Bully XLs and similar breeds.

They are owned by wealthy people - drug dealers and gang leaders.

I’ve seen several examples of dogs in busy shops and cafes lunging towards or biting a person or another dog

Really? I live somewhere where lots of people have dogs, and in 30 years I've never seen a dog biting someone in a cafe. Are you sure you aren't catastrophising?

dobblevit · 22/08/2024 16:57

Prenelope · 22/08/2024 14:46

I am probably going to get shot down in flames for this as it's mumsnet, but XL bullies are not one of the things I worry about at 3am.

Sure but do you worry about them at 10am in the park?

No. I have never seen one.

i saw this article linked on Reddit - absolutely terrifying and a snapshot into the psyche of the people who breed, sell and own these dogs

Finding Kimbo – Bully Watch UK

I can't bear to look at that picture of the little girl with that animal. It could rip her apart.

I HATE these dogs

HATE them.

There's a guy in my area that has TWO and TWICE they've gotten out of control and away from him and ran after cats.

I have small breeds and ALL the enjoyment I had from walking them is gone now because him constantly thinking he is going to come round the corner with these disgusting creatures and they might go after my small dogs.

I love dogs but I honestly want all XL Bullies to be euthanized

How awful. Your little dogs are at risk because someone is so selfish.

Exactly. They must take some feeding.

My neighbour across from me.. has had a couple staying with her since March .
They have an XL bully.
It is muzzled when l see it.. but it still makes me anxious very much.
Especially when my Grandsons come to stay.
She also has a SEN daughter age 12 with mental age of 6.. l worry for her.
I also think she's sub letting .
We don't talk because she used to turn her car around in my drive and neatly ran over my sleeping old cat.
When there is a perfectly good turning point 5 yards away.

Corinthiana · 22/08/2024 17:09

What a horrible neighbour, @PutOnYourRedShoesAndLetsDance - I'd be worried about her daughter and your grandsons as well.

SinnerBoy · 22/08/2024 17:16

Whilst I'm sympathetic to the family of the man killed by his dogs, two of which are on the loose, my sympathy for him is muted. At least - so far - no complete innocent has been injured, or killed by them.

Spondoolies · 22/08/2024 14:44

We are hearing about these attacks what seems like daily and I’m sure there must be loads of non fatal attacks going on that the owners keep quiet. I agree they all need to go. Certainly the muzzle needs to be extended to other dog breeds, I also think there should be a limit to number of dogs in a household and strict rules about which dog breeds are allowed in households with children.

I agree - certain dog breeds if in a home with dc need SS involvement on the basis that the dc are at risk of future harm

MugPlate · 22/08/2024 18:06

Maybe more people need to sue when they're bitten.

redtrain123 · 22/08/2024 18:13

If an xl bully moved in next door, my house would be put up for sale immediately.

No wonder kids carry knives with the threat of XL bullies/types around.

I have a penknife with me for work at all times so I know what I'll be doing if me or my kith/kin get attacked.

ejsmith99 · 22/08/2024 18:33

Well the pro-bully lot are back in court next week trying to overturn the ban because the judge thought they had a case.

I can see the arguments for licensing breeders, but they risk promoting big concerns who churn puppies out, and penalising breeders who only occasionally have a litter because if you do it right it is a LOT of work, a LOT of money and a LOT of risk.

But since pretty much all our laws are rarely enforced it will be yet another tax on responsible people, whilst the scum carry on regardless.

I've spoken to a paediatrician & 2 plastic surgeons and they are very clear, those breeds under the pitbull phenotype cause far more damage than other dog types.

They are not safe pets, they shouldn't be in homes with vulnerable people & if we can't cull them at least ban them in public spaces. And laws need to be expanded to all bloodsport dogs. We don't need breeds that have been selectively bred to fight and kill. Just like we don't need flammable cladding on buildings, choose a safer alternative

caramac04 · 22/08/2024 18:40

I had hoped the cessation of breeding and use of leads and muzzles would be enough. I have met some XL bullies which seem calm and gentle.
The problem seems to be that many have a hair trigger but attack with no warning signs. To me , this means there is no way of predicting which dogs will attack or when they attack.
It’s well known that these attacks mostly lead to death (s) even if it is a fully grown man with a ‘weapon’.
I honestly don’t want to say it but I think euthanasia is probably the best thing all round. I blame the greedy, feckless breeders mostly and also dickhead owners who want a tough dog.

ticktickticktickBOOM · 22/08/2024 18:55

Since the 'muzzles in public places' legislation began most people seem to be getting killed in their own homes or by dogs who have run out of peoples front doors/escaped from gardens.

I do agree with a previous poster that the safeguarding of children in homes with XL bullies and similar 'types' is a huge issue.
Children don't have a choice in the matter do they.
I find it incredible that people would put their own children at risk by owning an XL and having it around the house and garden unmuzzled.
I guess some people really are telling the truth when they say they value dogs above humans. Their own children even.

Spondoolies · 22/08/2024 19:03

also, we are all talking about ‘XL’ but we really mean to include all the other breeds that don’t necessarily fall in the legal definition, lots of breeds that have no business being family pets

EasternStandard · 22/08/2024 19:18

Glad to see the yanbu is so high

I heard this earlier and it's utter madness. Society doesn't need to get to the point where a breed is so dangerous they need to be part of a hunt

That’s very scary and incredibly sad. As I read I thought I bet some people would aspire to and even pay extra for the status of owning a ‘Kimbo dog’

Extremely unpopular thing to say and slightly tangential but.....this is connected to the wider culture of people taking their dogs absolutely bloody everywhere! Why on earth are people taking their dog to the corner shop or the supermarket?! Leave it at home!

I grew up with dogs. They were left at home when we went out for the day (they'd get plenty of exercise before and after). They were trained to stay at home and this was absolutely the norm amongst everyone I knew. Now people take their dogs everywhere as if they are children - shopping in town, to cafes etc. It has become ridiculous. Every gift shop has an extensive collection of crap for people who anthromorphise their dogs to buy. Every single holiday cottage now has to be dog friendly (and therefore stinking and grotty for everyone else).

If you want your lovely labradoodle to sit in a cafe, you have to accept the XL Bullies too. It has gone too far.

I think it’s because so many people got dogs during covid and businesses are struggling so they have no choice, they must be dog friendly.

The reality is that in most circumstances, a small knife would be useless. It’s been well documented that when an XL bully is in a kill frenzy, it will continue to attack and hold it’s prey even if it’s sustained multiple injuries itself. They literally will fight to the death.
