Would this be a 111 call?

I took dd to a farm yesterday and today my daughter is being sick, I'm worried it's something she's picked up from one of the animals she was feeding from her hand although did wash them.
I have tried to do an e-consult and they have closed them for today, I have been trying to call the surgery since 10am after she was sick and it keeps saying all lines are busy please try later.

Would this be something you'd call 111 for?
I obviously wouldn't for general sickness but with the chance of it being from contact with animals.
I'm not looking to replace medical advice with this post, just asking what other mums would do?

Yes, it doesn't have to be an emergency for you to call 111. Go ahead.

poorlychildren · 22/08/2024 11:36

Thank you

It's probably more likely to be a bug caught from one of the many other people who also went to the farm.

I'd wait and see before calling

Wahine24 · 22/08/2024 11:38

Do you have a chemist near? They might be able to help? I think 111 if child is under 5 will send you to the hospital ( this has been my experience not sure if it's the rule)

poorlychildren · 22/08/2024 11:41

She's 6.

WhatMe123 · 22/08/2024 11:42

From growing up around farm animals it's most likely a normal bug rather than something caught from an animal

mumto2teenagers · 22/08/2024 11:42

I would probably check with a pharmacy first and see what they recommend.

Wahine24 · 22/08/2024 11:43

@poorlychildren did you go with friends? Are their kids ok?
I grew up with loads of animals &, would tend to think bug not something from the animals

I took one other sibling who is fine.

I'd chance it being a bug but if you're still if I were you I would go to the pharmacist

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 22/08/2024 11:51

I'd go on how the child is rather than what you think the illness might be. If they are overly lethargic or have been sick for so long that you think they are dehydrated or then maybe call. I don't think they'd do anything eg any tests if it had been going on less than 48 hours and there are no other concerning symptoms. They will just tell you to keep an eye on her, frequent small sips of water, reintroduce bland foods etc. So personally I'd not bother

Wahine24 · 22/08/2024 11:51

Obviously you know your child and how well/unwell they are.
If you are concerned speak to a medical professional (pharmacist)
I'm not trying to dampen your concern, but the likelihood is it's just a bug x

ByCupidStunt · 22/08/2024 11:52

i think I would take her to see her GP who knows her best.

Easier said than done for a lot of us.
If your DD is hydrated and her temp is not too high then I would just observe but call 111 if I got more concerned or she deteriorates
I wouldn't do anything different if I thought the sickness was from a farm animal

bord · 22/08/2024 12:00

Personally I'd avoid physically going into the pharmacist (as it probably is a bug and you'll just be spreading it).

But I suspect 111 or a pharmacist would tell you to keep an eye on her and get different support if she becomes lethargic, isn't keeping water down, if you are more concerned she's getting worse etc.

Ringing 111 won't do any harm tbh if you are worried. Hope she's better soon.

The GP won’t want to see a vomiting child, surely? Given how common and contagious V&D bugs are I assumed they’d want you to stay at home and contact them for advice.

Call 111 if you’re worried OP and see what they say. It’s worth it to put your mind at rest a bit!

MyOtherHusbandIsAWash · 22/08/2024 12:03

Vomiting shortly after being on a farm is unlikely to be something contracted from a farm animal, more likely food poisoning or something from another person eg noro. Diarrhoea on the other hand should be taken seriously as several serious infections from animals may cause diarrhoea. If you are worried, call 111 for advice.

KreedKafer · 22/08/2024 12:11

She's just as likely to have picked up a bug from another person at the farm as she is from one of the animals! And even if it was something she picked up from an animal, that doesn't mean it's necessarily anything serious. Most bugs you could pick up from an animal are no different from the kind of minor infection you'd pick up from another person, so try not to worry yourself too much.

I would treat it like any other episode of sickness and just watch her symptoms - obviously if it seems to be worse than a standard bug or she has additional/unusual symptoms, or if it goes on for longer than seems normal, then seek medical help. You can call 111 for peace of mind if you want to, but don't think 111 will tell you anything other than to keep an eye on her and make sure she stays hydrated - she's only been throwing up for a couple of hours.

poorlychildren · 22/08/2024 12:13

Thank you for all advice, I've spoken to the surgery now who are at full capacity but say there's a lot of sickness bugs going around and to see pharmacy if she gets worse so I'll see how she is for now.

Edited

This is much more likely.

What for?

And don't take your child.
