Bloody watery stools - DH - Seek medical help??

Evening,

Posting here for traffic. I’m concerned as my DH has had really bad stomach cramps and bloating for a few days. He spent the whole night going to the toilet with diarrhoea and also has sulphur burps which are understandably making him feel horrendous. This afternoon his stomach cramps are worsening and he’s told me he’s had two episodes of pooping a lot watery blood. He’s back on the toilet now.

AIBU to suggest he calls 111?

He’s a typical ‘I’m fine’ type of person and hardly ever goes to the doctor. It’s frustrating because I can see he is in pain and he has practically lived in the bathroom the past couple of days.

Does anyone have experience of this? I feel he should be checked out.

I wouldn't call 111, personally and as someone with IBD, but I would make an urgent GP appointment to be seen within a week and take it from there.

Yes, it could be something serious, even very serious, or it could be something un-serious and easily treatable. Either way, it needs prompt investigation.

In the meantime, try not to panic x

I had Campylobacter a few years ago which resulted in bloody, watery stools. I think you need to ring the gp tomorrow and drop in a stool sample. If it is Campylobacter it’s easily treated with antibiotics.

selldonaterecycle · 21/08/2024 22:08

He obviously needs to get checked out. It might be some kind of infection. If I were you I'd make sure you don't go too close to him or touch things he has and be careful when using the bathroom yourself OP just in case it is an infection that he can transmit to you. I'd be bleaching everything!
I would 111 it or at the very least call Dr first thing.

Jellycats4life · 21/08/2024 22:15

Since it’s come on suddenly it’s more likely to be an infection than inflammatory bowel disease. I’d call the GP in the morning, but if he’s feeling too rough to cope overnight 111 is appropriate

outdamnedspots · 21/08/2024 22:17

Is he drinking? Weeing? Watch he doesn't get dehydrated. Worth calling 111 for advice.

HelpDH · 21/08/2024 22:21

Thank you, I suppose it’s probably best to call the GP tomorrow. I will try to persuade him although I think even he will want to be checked out. I think the thought of that much blood just really freaked me out.

Never considered an infection @selldonaterecycle but noted!

@JulietSierra i’ve not heard of that - is it some type of infection?

@MissPeachyKeen thank you, very rational advice

@outdamnedspots he is sipping bits of water at my persistence and weeing ok. I will keep alert to the signs but think it’s best to call the GP first thing

Has he eaten something dodgy? I was pooping literally water when I had salmonella.
Gross but worth taking a stool sample so GP can test it.
If he is managing to drink it's probably ok to wait until the morning and call the GP

My daughter has IBD (ulcerative colitis) which presented as bloody loose stools and abdominal pain,

you definately need to be seen.
there is also crohns disease which shows similar symptoms. Im no doctor and cant say for sure what it is but it sounds awfully similar amd definately needs to be investigated.

must be something in the water because im waiting to be tested for bowel disease too! More people are having tummy issues it seems!!

Thelnebriati · 21/08/2024 23:32

Phone 111; if he has an ulcerated bowel they may want to give him a CT scan and IV antibiotics.

outdamnedspots · 22/08/2024 00:07

Good luck, OP. I hope the GP helps.

HelpDH · 22/08/2024 07:26

Thanks all so much for your responses. We have considered he has some kind of bowel disease as he has always struggled with this kind of thing, he practically lives on Buscopan! I was worried more so because of the blood and the pain which seems worse.

He had another bad night and is looking pretty poorly so he has said himself he will be ringing the doctors as soon as they open. Luckily our surgery is pretty good and we always manage to get a same day appt so fingers crossed it’s the case today. Relieved he is going to be seen anyway, horrible seeing him like this.

Omg get him an emergency appointment he's literally got blood coming out his bum! I'm not one to bother out of hours doctors unnecessarily but he should have had pain relief and an examination yesterday that's what the nhs is there for! I wouldn't have even blamed you for a&e in this instance! Hope he gets sorted today, sounds like colitis perhaps.
