Public transport with food poisoning

TwoNoMore · 21/08/2024 12:51

I just need hand holding and reassurance
I've had to leave work as I've just suddenly come down with food poisoning symptoms. I don't drive so I've got a 20 minuet bus ride home. I've vomitted four times at work this last hour and simultaneously been sat on the toilet if you catch my drift Blush

How I'm gonna make it through this journey I have no idea. I have a carrier bag for an emergency but that's it. Send good thoughts and chit chat please FlowersSad

@Notmybill don't camp out in the accessible bathroom! Do you expect people who need it to hold for hours?!

@TwoNoMore so glad you're home. Get well soon.

StormingNorman · 21/08/2024 23:22

TwoNoMore · 21/08/2024 12:56

I was too scared of the symptoms happening in someone's car I can't imagine anything more mortifying

Buses and trains get cleaned too.

Shockingly as I've worked there for 6 years...there are no disabled people who need an accessible bathroom on the floor and most wfh anyway.

Untwist your knickers. I'd also argue that someone who has food poisoning needs an accessible bathroom. You'd rather they were in a tiny cubicle dealing with that next to other Co workers and having to leave the cubicle to get to a basin or access to water?

An ill person needs a large bathroom with a basin next to to toilet and a floor they can lie on.

Honest to god what it wrong with you lot.

DoTheRoary · 21/08/2024 23:27

@Notmybill I need an accessible bathroom otherwise I cannot go, so sorry I literally need it to untwist my knickers! Might be strange to you as you haven't encountered someone like me at work but I'm afraid we do exist and we do need to poop and pee 😀

This place is hilarious. Only on mumsnet do people start hand wringing and tell me not to camp out in the work disabled bathroom when I'm not even sick and won't be doing it.

There's a pile on telling me not to do it when I'm not I'm that position anyway.

Christ almighty you lot are hilarious.

DoTheRoary · 21/08/2024 23:36

@Notmybill my first post wasn't telling you not to! It was arguing against your suggestion for the OP to.

Sorry if you find it hysterical that people might object to that suggestion on Mumsnet. It's just that I am disabled and so I do need an accessible toilet everywhere I go, so when I see people urging others to use them I tend to react because, you know, I'd rather not end up shitting on the floor. You might object to that as much as to OP having to do it in a cubicle near others...

ZenaZula · 21/08/2024 23:43

I’m so sorry OP 🙈 but not even joking, how have I come across this post just minutes after watching the “shitting in the street” scene from Bridesmaids? 😂😂 I “shit” you not. I’ve just paused it to wait for my daughter to come back from the loo.

otravezempezamos · 21/08/2024 23:53

Only on MN when someone writes about being ill do people squark ohhhh but think of other peeeeeople.

Sorry but when you are feeling that ill you have to do what you have to do. You don’t have the capacity for analyzing, you just need to get home as fast as possible in the way that will cause you the least amount of discomfort and humiliation.

Oldinjuryhelp111037 · 21/08/2024 23:17

Hope you feel better soon @TwoNoMore

Some really horrible, unsympathetic people here! And your work place too. Someone should have offered to take you home!

Nobody drives in to my work, maybe it’s the same for OP.

GreenTeaLikesMe · 22/08/2024 00:15

Jumpingthruhoops · 21/08/2024 22:22

This! 👏👏 Honestly, this is what gives me the fear. People being so careless!

Though, it does strike me as a little odd that someone would carry an actual 'bag for life' to work. A reuseable nylon bag, maybe? But a supermarket bag for life? I'm getting the impression this isn't an isolated incident...

I am assuming that the OP sometimes does shopping in her lunch break or on the way home from work.

I think you need to get some therapy for your phobia, as it seems to be making you struggle with feeling empathy for people who are ill.

Ginmonkeyagain · 22/08/2024 07:25

Christ alive people, show some compassion, food poisoning is not a virus. Of course you should practice good hygiene around any vomiting and diarrhoea because of general infection risks.

God forbid anyone be ill outside their house. Sometimes this stuff happens and you need to get home.

TwoNoMore · 22/08/2024 09:24

Just thought I'd come back on this morning still feel awful but needed to defend myself. I can't just camp out in the disabled toilet as I work in a public building. I had a bag for life with me as I'd brought my lunch in it that day. The fact I was sick in a carrier bag in the taxi was completely unavoidable and I apologised profusely however nothing left the bag and I had absolutely no other way of getting home as I do not drive and no one was available to come and collect me as they all have jobs or do not drive

Been there, done that, got the T-shirt.

I have empathy. But if there's a chance I can catch something as a result of someone else behaving selfishly then, I'm sorry (not sorry), but empathy goes out the window.

This lady threw up in a taxi FFS - someone's personal vehicle! As PPs have said, that is gross! Wonder how much 'empathy' the driver had in that moment?

She has already explained that she cannot just camp out in a disabled toilet, and many of us have reasons why we have to get some at a certain hour (public transport may cease to run after a certain point, for example). There are times when ppl have to just get home, and it isn’t realistic for you to demand that everyone reduces the risk of infectious disease to zero.

Get some more therapy if the first lot hasn’t worked, seriously. You need to deal with this problem.

Did you miss the little pandemic we had a while back where we were literally ordered to 'stay away from others' to 'save lives'?

So, yes, we do have to think of other people.

So, she's explained? Big deal.

The therapy worked just fine thanks. However, I will always have issues with people being selfish.

I don't know what the solution is. I just know what the solution isn't.
And it isn't to potentially infect other people!

Well that's pointless then isn't it

When you are as ill as that it’s a case of survival. You get home, two hoots about anyone else.

user1492757084 · 22/08/2024 10:19

Oh my Goodness!
Buy vomit bags from chemist - or have work mate buy them for you.
Stuff paper and plastic (bin bag) inside your trousers. Wash your hands well and wear a strong deodorant.
You don't want to leave any residue behind on the public transport.

Well, that's you. Please don't judge everyone by your (lack of) standards.

What was she supposed to do? I have lots of sympathy for your situation but I don't see how OP had a choice, bless her.

NasiDagang · 22/08/2024 12:06

So many crazy people on Mumsnet! I think the majority of you are on weed.

Kipperthedawg · 22/08/2024 12:18

I'd love to hear the magic solution to OP's problem. I think she did the best thing she could have. A taxi is pretty used to vomit and the driver is probably screened off. She was sick in a bag.

Was she supposed to walk? Live on the streets for a few days?

I can't think of a better option, either, although if the OP had been one of my colleagues, I would have given her a lift home (but I would have made you sit on a bin liner in the car, OP!).
