That's not generally how gallstones present - it's like the worst pain you've ever felt and you think you're dying normally when you have an attack. Occasionally it presents differently but I wouldn't think gallstones would be my first guess.

mummaof5nannyto1 · 20/08/2024 19:34

Agree with first comment , I had gallstones and the pain is horrendous I ended up in an and e several times , honestly thought I was having a heart attack the first time !

CherryBlossom321 · 20/08/2024 19:37

Yes, it could. Sometimes gallstones have no symptoms at all. My mums were spotted following investigations after she had symptoms like yours. It’s only if they become trapped inside a duct inside the gallbladder that biliary colic occurs.

soupfiend · 20/08/2024 19:38

Gallstones can grumble, my certainly do, niggly, can floor you and then goes in spasms

Each 'attack' is not necessarily going to put you in hospital each time or result in you vomiting

The area and and how you describe the pain is right.

Badgergirl123 · 20/08/2024 19:45

I had my gallbladder out a few months ago after months of attacks that were largely upper right hand side. By the end my bile duct was blocked and I had radiating pain all over right and left torso and back. By this point it was excruciating and I was in constant agony. It could also be an ulcer as symptoms can be similar. Hope you're okay, it's no fun at all!!

grumpygallbladder · 20/08/2024 19:49

As you can see from my user name I recently had an issue with my gallbladder! I felt like I had a belt tied tight under my ribs and at times it hurt to breathe in deeply. My pain often starts on the left side of my ribs but all the pain is just below my ribs not lower down.

defnotadomesticgoddess · 20/08/2024 19:50

Is the pain triggered after eating food with fat in? My gp guessed it when I ate a piece of dry bread with honey which was ok, but if I ate a full fat yoghurt I would get the pain. Before that I’d started feeling nauseas and was losing my appetite. Then after a week or so it hurt whatever I ate turned out it was infected too. Only way to tell really is an abdominal ultrasound. Mine showed lots of tiny stones. Before the ultrasound the gp was also considering gastritis or an ulcer. 💐

BeSpoonyAquaHare · 20/08/2024 19:51

It’s possible. For me the symptoms of gallstones were much more acute and terrifying; a sudden onset of the most agonising pain I’ve ever experienced in my life accompanied by repeat vomiting and then an abrupt subsiding of symptoms about twenty minutes later. Had a few attacks and the pain was worse than labour.

But maybe it can present less acutely too? The location of your pain sounds right for gallstones so it definitely could be.

Idontknowwhattosay1 · 20/08/2024 19:53

Thanks everyone. I do have some gas and also vomited a bit last night, from the gas but the pain hasn’t been severe. a moderate stabbing kind of pain

Do you have acid reflux or heartburn a lot?

i spent 2 years and a lot of pain, a lot of scans and a lot of appointments thinking I had gallstones.

turned out I had a duodenal ulcer!

soupfiend · 20/08/2024 20:45

It certainly can be less acute, I called 111 a few times for pain relief, very unwell but not to the degree of kidney stone pain (if anyone has had that) where I was on the floor rolling around and vomiting, horrendous

However after these attacks, had an ultrasound and as I predicted, I have gallstones

I take digestive enzymes for if it grumbles, eggs are particularly triggering but sometimes there is no pattern. Im on borrowed time as still waiting to see a consultant (66 week wait)

BusyMum47 · 20/08/2024 21:20

The gallstones episode I had which resulted in being blue lighted to hospital was a terrifying, intense pain & crushing feeling in the centre of my chest, going through into my back, between my shoulder blades. Genuinely thought I was having a heart attack.

Rumblings on & off prior to that were still in the same place & accompanied by frequent heartburn.

Only a scan will say for sure if it's gallstones - get to the doctor ASAP. In the mean time, if it IS stones, adopting a strict 'eat nothing containing more than 5% fat' diet will help keep things calm.

I really feel for you - it's hideous!

For what it's worth, since having mine removed & taking a daily low dose of Omeprazole, I've been symptom free - not even any heartburn & can eat pretty much anything!

Yes 111 called an ambulance even though I didnt think I was having a heart attack but the pain radiates, whjich is another reason why some doctors will deny what it might be, just because it might be in the left or the arm or the chest, it doesnt mean its not gallstones

I also have not amended my diet, its full of fat, very high fat as I dont eat a lot of carbs. I havent had an attack for months but I know Im chancing it. I try to take the enzymes if I feel a grumble

familyissues12345 · 20/08/2024 21:52

My gallbladder "niggled" and had full blown drop to the floor attacks - my first one DH called an ambulance as he thought I was having a heart attack Blush

Idontknowwhattosay1 · 20/08/2024 23:09

Thanks everyone. This seems to be made worse by certain foods actually, I have general stomach ache now after fish and chips which was a treat after a busy day. Does seem to be worse after fatty foods. Will cut these out and see if it helps

I’ve also had mine removed, I don’t take any medication, and don’t have any symptoms at all. I’m so glad it’s gone!

KreedKafer · 21/08/2024 09:48

There are loads of ways that gallstones can affect you - I had the typical agonising pain that everyone talks about but I also had a lot of nagging discomfort in between. So it’s not impossible that it’s your gallbladder.

KaySam · 21/08/2024 10:22

I’ve got gallstones, have never had the agonising pain that people talk about. Just like niggling pains and slight discomfort
