To think that a ‘do not swim’ notice matters?

DD8 went swimming with friends for a couple of hours yesterday in a local open bay and woke up today feeling dodgy. Has been in bed sleeping and just not feeling great, tummy seems ok.

Turns out there’s a ‘do not swim’ notice in place today after water testing. Am worried that she has caught something. DH thinks I’m over-reacting as these notices are over precautionary and that’s she’s just tired. AIBU (and maybe avoid any flesh eating bacteria stories as I’m worried enough!) Thank you.

Oh no! She might have caught something, keep an eye on her and perhaps ring up whoever has posted the notice (land owner / local authority) for some more information on what's shown up in tests and if you need to do anything further?

Honestly there's loads of bugs going round at the moment, we've just been floored by one at our house and no strange swimming expeditions here!

boxingcleverinsligo · 20/08/2024 19:12

@mushpush yes have contacted them but it’s our local council so might take some time! Hope that you all recover swiftly!

@boxingcleverinsligo

Aw Thankyou! Fingers crossed they reply quickly and your DD just has a bug! Hopefully she's perking up soon 😊

PoliteOtter · 20/08/2024 19:13

There is a do not swim at our local sea lake. It’s to do with the storm last night, could this be the case at yours? In which case it is probably unrelated.

boxingcleverinsligo · 20/08/2024 19:13

Also, does anyone know how long it would normally be before she’d be sick if it was the water? Thanks!

Additionally, there are other places where it’s not safe for other reasons. So signs should not be ignored. Just oughta Porth Leven there’s an idyllic looking place with wicked rip tide

boxingcleverinsligo · 20/08/2024 19:15

@Summertimer would never have thought of that aspect, good to know actually

Signs should never be ignored.

They are not put up for the heck of it.

Itsmells · 20/08/2024 19:20

Possibly exposed to raw sewage. Id be keeping a very close eye

Songlines · 20/08/2024 19:22

Whereabouts are you?
If it's the southwest there are huge ongoing issues with one of the beaches down there. Raw sewage has been discharged several times this year

NicoleSkidman · 20/08/2024 19:24

The sign will have been there for a reason, likely poor water quality. Did you only find out about the sign afterwards?

I don't think they ignored it, I think it was put up the day after the swim, unless I am misinterpreting.

Well there can be nasty bacteria in sewage. Certain strains of E Coli are extremely damaging to the organs and cause very serious illnesses. Along with hepatitus etc.

keep a close eye 0-7 days

  • update - hepatitis can take 2-7 weekss to show symptoms
boxingcleverinsligo · 20/08/2024 19:25

@Itsmells @Songlines yes, in the south and sewage is what I’m afraid of and, like a lot of these things, it’d probably be 2am with nowhere open if she gets properly sick. I’d have thought she’d have gastro signs at this stage though as it was yesterday morning.

boxingcleverinsligo · 20/08/2024 19:27

@YesThatsATurdOnTheRug yes, the water was tested yesterday morning and the sign only put up today. It was her first water camp so I’d naively assumed that they’d test the water beforehand and not during!

Oh no, 2-7 weeks! Argh

I don't know how the water companies are getting away with discharging raw sewage onto our beaches.

Fubarred · 20/08/2024 19:35

There were problems with the sewage pipe here yesterday (in the south) so sewage was diverted into the sea (!) with no swim warnings. Can you have a tel appt with a gp to see if their poo needs testing?

FragileWookiee · 20/08/2024 19:35

Download the safer seas and rivers app. Always handy to check if planning an outdoor swim

JohnofWessex · 20/08/2024 19:40

@JohnofWessex well, it’s a (quite expensive) kids swim camp, I’d have thought they’d check the water the day before!
