To be disappointed with my hairdresser’s response?

I had my hair done by my hair dresser of 18 months, and she gave me a root tint and balayage.

The highlights look okay, but the root tint is really uneven. My roots look ginger from the front, and but really dark at the sides/back. I just wanted a mid brown all over. I raised this feedback with her and she said can clearly see it’s darker in other areas but there’s nothing she can do - she uses the same colour all over.

I have had my roots tinted by other hairdressers before and it was always an even colour across my head - so I think she’s just fobbing me off. Aibu? I think she has applied it unevenly, hasn’t put the right amount on in the back and sides and has let the top over process. I think it’s a technique issue. But she thinks I think she’s used different colours when that’s not the case.

Over processing usually makes the tint go darker, though. Usually, when they do balayage, they put highlights closer to the root at the front to frame the face so it may be a bit of a bleeding from the foils. She should be able to correct it by putting a bit more colour at the front to match the back.
There is nothing she can do to lighten the back and sides, unfortunately. Maybe this is what she was referring to. It should lighten up after a few washes.

@Catza I get my natural hair lightened with the tint, not darkened. So I’m not sure if you advice applies.

Fair enough, I didn't have this information when I commented.
If that's the case, it sounds like an easy fix with another root tint. Not sure why she is not willing to do it. Is there a more experienced hairdresser in the salon or is she self-employed?

Thanks, well she is the salon owner and is really experienced, with a huge social media following based on her results.

So I’ll need to get my hair done somewhere else in the future instead.

its a shame because she’s really good with balayage but I think she just cba with root tints.

I think a really good colourist would maybe not use the same colour all over, thiough!

I've never had root tints, but I know from my hairdresser's Instagram that she prides herself on making every colour treatment bespoke - so if there's variation in your natural hair, she'll adapt the colour accordingly for different areas, to get an even result.

creepywoman · 20/08/2024 15:57

@KreedKafer i actually asked her if that was possible and she said no, it’s not the standard thing and she isn’t comfortable with that.

it’s weird because my previous salon in a different area, was quite good at customising your colour. They would put a really ashy toner on to counteract any gingery tones for example. She doesn’t want to use different toners in different areas either
