To rent a place by the sea when I already own?

I currently live in a flat in a city next to a busy road. My bedroom and the back of the flat is very quiet. But the front has trucks trundling past all day and sometimes make the place shake. It is starting to take a toll on me living in a noisy area.

After four years I find myself desperate to experience living by the sea for a while. Would essentially mean renting my place out and then renting a place somewhere else.

Is this just daft?

I did this once. Rented out my place and rented a lovely place in the countryside. Didn’t regret it at all.

It sounds like a stepping stone to see if you want a different sort of life. Why not? I could not be living anywhere where traffic makes the house shake.

FreedomDogs · 19/08/2024 17:47

If you can afford it and make the logistics with work etc work, why not? Sounds lovely.

LilacWriter · 19/08/2024 17:49

@mindutopia I got used to it for a long time but lately I'm just sick of it plus the sound of traffic. It's like I drowned it out but now I just hear it all the time.

The other thing is my partner and I are currently long distance. He lives an hour from a few lovely sea locations and we are spending an increasing amount of time at each others places.

It would be nice to be a little but closer while also living somewhere I've always wanted to be before we met.

And yes @mindutopia I feel like this is a way to test it out before making a bigger move decision.

My friends have done this and it's working brilliantly for them. I'm pretty certain they'll buy a seaside place once their current seaside tenancy runs out. One of them in particular has embraced seaside living hugely, they are so happy. The other one loves it too and is slowly disengaging with their other city life.
Be happy.

Go for it! I live by the seaside - previously a Londoner. Best thing we ever did 🤩

Also I'm in Scotland now and my partner is North England so any suggestions are welcome!

Northumberland?

flowergirl24 · 19/08/2024 17:58

I suggest home exchange. There’s a lovely community feeling to it, and if you want a more informal arrangement, it could work really well for you. You could swap houses for 6 months.

@flowergirl24 is this a programme of some kind? Could you link to it?

Cumbria?
Edit
near the coast and the Lake District.

ErrolTheDragon · 19/08/2024 18:06

'North England' May not be as big as Scotland but it's pretty big! East or west coast?

LilacWriter · 19/08/2024 18:07

@ErrolTheDragon East Coast of England ideally

Open to other places I haven't thought of in Scotland

Amble

Seahouses

Dunbar

North Berwick

Gullane

Aberlady

ErrolTheDragon · 19/08/2024 18:11

Anyway YANBU, especially if you do it out of season - some people find airbnbs for reasonable rates if they want to do a short trial of an area.

If east coast then agree Northumberland has some gorgeous bits

It’s a company. There’s an app and a website. It’s a bit like Airbnb but without the frills. You can do worldwide exchanges of your home. Essentially, you can travel the world and just pay the travel.

You can filter your search; some people do a reciprocal house swap where you directly swap houses, or you can gain points on the system. Each position is different: some people might like you to water their plants when you are away, whereas others are more hands off and it’s a second home, for instance.

I think if you are in London, you will get quite a bit of interest if you list your home.
