To apply anyway?

I've come to the sad conclusion that I can no longer do my job and will need to look for something else 😞 I have sciatica and am on my feet for up to 14hrs a day, I just can't cope with the pain I'm in every day anymore.

Problem is I've been in my current industry so long I don't have much experience in anything else and a lot of my transferable skills would mainly transfer to similar industries where I'd be on my feet all day and I can't do that anymore.

I've accepted that I have to take a pay cut to go in at the bottom and work my way up but for a lot of the entry level jobs I'm looking at I don't have some of the skills/experience they say they want. I'm sure I can learn but is there even a point in me applying or will they just throw my application straight in the bin?

Some of them also say they require a driving license, which I don't have. The type of jobs I'm going for it isn't essential to transport things (like a taxi or delivery driver) so the only reason I could see this would be necessary is due to a remote work location and lack of public transport in the area. I have a motorcycle license, so I can get around but is there a point in applying if I don't have this?

Contact them and ask why the job requires driving?

Well if you don't apply, then the answer will definitely be no... good luck!

Surely if you are good in your current area, you'll have some transferable skills. Things like time management and organisation and communication skills that apply in almost all jobs.

What kind of job are you looking for and what kind of qualifications do you have?

squashedalmondcroissant · 19/08/2024 09:02

Definitely have time management, attention to detail, multi tasking, organisation and communication skills. My spelling/grammar is great and I've been customer facing basically my whole working life so my customer service is top notch. I'm confident on the phone, I'm a talker and a people pleaser 😁

No official office/admin experience but that's the kind of thing I'm after (that's what I'll get around here anyway). That or receptionist, etc.

I've worked many many years in catering and retail, I think there's a lot of transferable stuff but it's specific experience in certain computer systems, sags, payroll, things like that that I lack.

Oh, forgot to answer the qualifications question!

The normal GCSE's (10 A-C).
2 AS levels.
2 A2 levels.

Various NVQ's and H&S qualifications.

Foundation degree in a scientific subject.

Sounds like you have good skills and qualifications. Don't go for entry level jobs - aim higher and you are more likely to get it.

For any job, look most carefully at the section called "person specification". See if you can tick 80% of the boxes they ask for there. And if you do, then go for it.
