To think I need to throw everything in the fridge away?

I have fresh meat in the fridge which is in date and also a pack of chicken fillets which is 5 days out of date.
I have thrown the chicken away which is in a packet but what about all the other food in the fridge?
It's other meat, cheese, vegetables etc?

Tbf I'd have probably cooked the chicken fillets up and ate them 😆

PurpleFruit1 · 18/08/2024 15:28

Everything will be fine

Sandwichgen · 18/08/2024 15:46

Unless they were actually humping, no

Cattery · 18/08/2024 15:47

I’d throw the lot away and the fridge 🙄

butterfly0404 · 18/08/2024 15:47

Then burn the street.

I say we take off and nuke the site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.

People like this are the reason why they got rid of best before dates...

RJnomore1 · 18/08/2024 16:39

Chicken doesn’t have a best before date it has - and still has - a use by date. Five day out of date chicken is a good chance at making you ill.

OP others have already said it but if it’s a sealed pack of chicken nothing else needs to go and if it isn’t only things which have come into contact with the actual chicken need to go. Most of the fridge should be fine.

In case you don’t n or one of the reasons you store meat on the bottom shelf of the fridge is so it doesn’t drip onto things below it and cross contaminate them. Things above are always fine.

Same, I don't think I've looked at a 'use by' date for years. If it smells fine and isn't growing something on it or moving I'll eat it 😆

And obviously don't throw everything in your fridge away OP that would be a tremendous waste. Donate it if you really must get rid of it but don't bloody bin it.

Lmnop22 · 18/08/2024 17:05

Please under no circumstances throw it away. If it gives you the ick for whatever reason (and no raw chicken juices have contaminated other foods as pp gave mentioned) donate the other food to a food bank or give to someone who is struggling for food if you know of anyone.

You can explain that it shared a fridge with some chicken that went off 5 days ago and that you don’t feel comfortable eating it but, the likelihood is from the tenor of the responses here, they won’t have the same misgivings and will gratefully accept a fridge full of food

Haha.....I normally test cooked products on the cat......she has a better nose than me 🤣

MidnightMeltdown · 18/08/2024 20:51

You should probably throw the whole fridge in the skip - just to be on the safe side.

DreamW3aver · 18/08/2024 20:54

Best to emigrate as well just to be sure

FinallyHere · 18/08/2024 22:10

Jay fresh hell is this?

IBegYourBiggestPardon · 18/08/2024 23:03

Don't be insane! Of course you don't need to throw everything out!

KreedKafer · 18/08/2024 23:07

Why on earth would you need to throw out anything except the one item that was out of date?

MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira · 18/08/2024 23:07

I found half a pack of chicken sausages in a ziplock bag in the cheese drawer in the fridge today, nearly a month out of date (because I'd never put sausages in the cheese drawer so assumed DH had put them in the freezer) I binned them, but it didn't even occur to me to bin anything else!

My garden fox would have regarded those as just coming into their prime, MyOther
