Give the neighbours rubbish back to them!?

I know what you're all thinking.. why be soo petty?

Where I live we have very small rubbish bins with collection only every 3 weeks, we manage as we recycle a lot of things but certain things I won't recycle like bleach bottles, tissues etc so they go into black bins!

The other day I realised someone had put a plastic carrier bag of rubbish in our bin (I mean like a bag you'd get from Tesco etc) when I went to put my own rubbish in from the car, loads of paper that could really be recycled but right on top was documents about their car 😑, my partner wasn't happy and did say he will put the bag next to their car but then said leave it and we will pull the bin out the back after the next collection. But last night I couldn't sleep.. and I heard then someone putting a bag in our bin AGAIN! But baring in mind this isn't the first time it's been happening. So now this morning I've pulled both bags out and pulled my wheelie bin out the back and I've left both bags by their car because I don't know exactly what house they live in, the paperwork showed the registration number of the car so that's where it's going!. I don't care they should be using their own.

I know some people would think this is petty etc but when you have such a small bin and are currently sorting out the house we need that room in our bin.
What would you do?

Get a gravity lock.

Anon284 · 17/08/2024 07:28

Nope, not petty, that would piss me right off.

I would keep an eye out if they go to their car as well and say something. We’re all doing numerous things to keep the bins down (I genuinely have to jump in mine some weeks!) you can’t just dump your shit elsewhere

Socrateswasrightaboutvoting · 17/08/2024 07:29

Add a polite note asking them to stop. Put it under their windscreen wiper. Not petty.

TinyYellow · 17/08/2024 07:30

As you have proof of who filled your bin, it’s fine for you to return their rubbish. Your neighbours are rude.

Blablablabladibla · 17/08/2024 07:31

Did they put in when your bin was out on collection day?...if so then I can understand why they would do that. They are assuming you've put in what you need and there's space left. It's still cheeky obvs.

Can you just say "please don't put stuff in our bin as we still put rubbish in right up until collection" I doubt they're going to say no.

Our bin isn't due to be emptied for another 2 weeks as it was only emptied last week!

Where I live 9/10 people leave their bins out because for some it's easier that hasn't got back entrance and haven't got to wheel it through their house.

I'm currently sorting out my house and anything that can't be recycled or given away or sold will be put into the bin, only emptied last week and it's half full already with my own things

Maybe put a note on your bin, asking not to be used for anyone else's rubbish. Just as you manage they should too.

F1boxbox · 17/08/2024 07:39

What also pisses me off and makes me laugh is that they have a large bin 😂😂

The council stopped doing large bins about 2 years ago so it's not like we can go and buy a larger bin

OP posts:
IMustDoMoreExercise · 17/08/2024 07:40

Why can't you recycle bleach bottles?

PeriIsKickingMyButt · 17/08/2024 07:40

Absolutely not petty! With 2 or 3 weekly collections it's impossible to fit everything from one household in a bin let alone someone else's! How rude

suburburban · 17/08/2024 07:59

They are very cheeky

Also stupid of them not to shred confidential info and they should be recycling

GRex · 17/08/2024 08:05

If you rinse a bleach bottle then it can be recycled, and tissues can go in the food waste bin.

I would have put the info on the street WhatsApp group - "Does anyone know who owns xyx car please? They have left rubbish in our bin, so we need to ask them to stop doing that. Thanks"

How do you know what bin they have?

Werweisswohin · 17/08/2024 08:14

I'd have returned the rubbish with a note - 'Please don't use our bin for your rubbish - we need the space in our bin for our rubbish.'
Some folk are CF are rely on others just accepting that.

Being able to see perhaps?

My oh dies this too. Jumps on the recycling to squish it flatter. We only gave one black bag a fortnight but recycling is soooo much.

But in OP she says she doesn't know which house they live in...

Maybe she's seen them wheeling their bin to collection point but not actually seen exactly where they emerged from?

Hemiola · 17/08/2024 08:19

I had this recently. You can contact your local council and report it as fly tipping. I didn't get anywhere as I had no proof of ID for who was doing it but you do.

F1boxbox · 17/08/2024 11:27

No idea what house they are in, we are in a little side street with only 4 houses, literally can see the main road, the person that keeps doing it lives on the main road and only about 6 or 7 houses joined together, they all have their bins out on bin day so I know that they all have bins and just being cheeky!
The other bag they put in our bin was stuff for the bin but as in food waste too which pissed me off too. We use a food waste bin that gets collected every week because I don't want food sitting in our bin rotting for like 3 weeks

Thank you everyone for your opinions, update is that they left before I could even out the bags near the car yesterday morning but when I got back home 8:40pm last night I done it then, woke up and left for work this morning to find the car had gone and also the bags 😂😀

YANBU to return neighbours' rubbish. YABU not to recycle bleach bottles, they are fine to recycle with the lid on!

SoYoung · 18/08/2024 18:19

We had this. Our bins at that time were very accessible from the main road at the side of our house. We've since had it fenced off. The first time it happened we thought we knew who it was but because we couldn't be absolutely sure we did nothing.

The next time it happened dh was really really annoyed because it was a carrier bag full of nasty stuff and meat that would have sat in there rotting for the next 10 days, so disgusting and rude. Anyway this time it had a couple of letters in with their names and address. I don't know why anyone would be that stupid but if you're that entitled I suppose you're probably stupid too. Maybe they thought we wouldn't notice or that we wouldn't do anything because we hadn't the first time.

They're not even that close to our house but once I knew who they were I could tell that they were just popping their rubbish in on their way past on a dog walk because our bins were the most accessible on the street when theirs were full I suppose.

Dh went round with the bag and knocked on their door. Nobody answered so he left it on their doorstep. He moved our bins around the back and that was the end of that. A bit of recycling is one thing but loads of stinking, rotting mess in an open carrier bag? Cheeky fuckers.

Greenphonecase · 18/08/2024 19:07

Sounds like the CF that lives next door to us. I saw him one day looking up at our windows to see if anyone was looking and then putting a bag of rubbish in our bin. I went outside got the bag out of my bin and chucked it next to his bin. He never did it again. To add insult to injury he also has two wheely bins for rubbish whereas we have to make do with one. I would never assume he had room in his bin for our rubbish. Tbf tho he is the most entitled arsehole I have ever met.

Friendlygingercat · 20/12/2025 12:12

When I first moved into this area I was renting. The NDN used to leave her bin opposite my gate where mine should go. Each week I moved it back to in front of her gate and the next week it was there again. One christmas it was left oppsite my gate along with a couple of black bags of rubbish. My nephew visited me with one of his large nd burly biker mates. They moved it back to the NDNs gate and "had a word". I dont know exactly what they said but it never happened again.

Another time I hired a skip because I was having a new kitchen. I thought it was safe as it was on my drive behind a locked gate. However one of my neighbours slung several black bags over the fence aiming for the skip, Only one or two went in. The rest landed in my garden. One of the workmen who arrived early saw who it was and asked me if I wanted him to return it to the neighbour. I said yes because I am petty like that. The 6 black bags were there on his front step when he returned from work. He would have had to move them to get in the house.
