To think this means it’s a no?

interviewed for a admin role and the interviewer said they’ll ‘call me on Tuesday next week with feedback’ and then looked at me and quickly said ‘either way’. Now in my mind I’m thinking they meant feedback on how the interview went but that it’s a definite no. I would have presumed they’d have said ‘ring you on Tuesday with a decision either way’. ‘Feedback’ makes me think it’s a no already? Or am I over thinking this?

I think you’re right. Sorry @EGM2019 and, if it is bad news, better luck next time. Hopefully the feedback will be useful. If it’s generic/vague, politely push for specifics so you can address what you can do differently.

And always ask them to keep your details on file in case any other opportunities come up. We’ve had a few situations where the chosen candidate hasn’t worked out for one reason or another, and we’ve contacted “number 2” to see if they were still interested in the role.

Greategret · 17/08/2024 04:02

They might have a preferred candidate who may or may not accept. But what is this new hell about prospective employers offering you "feedback" unasked?

McSpoot · 17/08/2024 04:23

Might have just used weird wording. I wouldn't read too much into it.

JMSA · 17/08/2024 06:39

It doesn't sound hopeful to me. Sorry, and hope I'm wrong!

EGM2019 · 17/08/2024 09:55

Oh no :( I thought that but if it was a definite no straight away wouldn’t they just call me earlier than before they’ve interviewed the other people due to interviewed on Monday/tuesday? Not sure what to think but the wait is going to be hard

Feel really now, job hunting is hard and this one seemed a great place to work🙁

They won’t want to rule anyone out just yet. If there is a preferred candidate they may not take the role or be unable to agree terms (salary, WFM, hours etc).

EGM2019 · 17/08/2024 13:54

That’s true, thanks. Just feel quite disheartened. I feel like it went well but just never know really

Well you never know. maybe the later interviewees will be terrible.
Also, as a PP suggests, I have on several occasions been second choice for a job and ended up getting it and staying for several years.
Good luck! Let us know how it goes!

If it's a no, and they offer feedback then let them know you liked the company and would be interested in any other roles. Can't hurt.

JohnLapsleyParlabane · 17/08/2024 14:03

I recently interviewed and that exact sentence was said to me. I was then offered the job and informed subsequently that I'd been the first choice. So possibly not a bad omen for you.

DatingDinosaur · 17/08/2024 14:09

Just to tip the scales here, I was told something similar in my interview for my current job role.

Turns out what they meant was they knew I was "the one" but couldn't say anything until they'd interviewed the other candidates.

As I understand it "feedback" can be as simple as 'yes you've got the job' or 'sorry, you haven't got the job'. They're feeding back to you the outcome of the interview, not a breakdown of all your failings!

I agree though, the wait is torturous.

ohyesido · 17/08/2024 14:09

You won’t know until Tuesday but for what it’s worth this sounds to me like the interviewer was correcting themselves after saying the wrong sentence rather than accidentally letting it slip that they’ve already made a decision

5128gap · 17/08/2024 14:10

I agree. I think the interviewer made an unfortunate slip of the tongue by saying feedback rather than 'to let you know', as I think they already decided not to offer it to you. This may be because they'd already made their mind up to offer to someone else, either an internal or someone who absolutely blew them away with their performance, and you didn't stand a chance against them anyway, which happens. The plus side is at least they're offering feedback so there could be something useful there.
The other thing to remember, and the reason they don't give an immediate no, is that the preferred candidate may decline, so its usual to get a firm acceptance from the chosen person before informing the other candidates. If that person declines and it went well for you, you could still be in with a chance.

EGM2019 · 17/08/2024 14:26

Thanks.they did ask me about my notice periods and things like that and told me about the training they offer and that I’d have other opportunities to progress so there was some positive bits. Just bit that confused at the end

Also, I did meet the other team members as this was part of it. I was also observed by the other team members doing a task so their feedback was also given to the manager and assistant manager after I’d left

Feeling rather anxious all weekend about this.. can't stop over thinking the feedback thing. It doesn't sound good I don't think and I really would like/need this job so having to wait to find out is awful but I am thinking its probably not in my favour :(

This has also happened to me.
