Moving and parking

Ok it's a parking one. With a twist. Not really an AIBU, more a request for advice. Advice, not sympathy; sorry darlings, I don't need any effing sympathy.

I'm moving house on Monday in central London, having booked and paid for a parking suspension from my local authority (City of Westminster, if that's relevant) so that the movers can do their job. I've got a receipt. However, I retuned home this evening, Friday, having been away, to find that the council have not bothered to put up the usual signs announcing the suspension, so that the spaces I've booked are full: my neighbours have, quite reasonably, parked their cars and gone away for the weekend.
What do I do? I've emailed the council.

Does it maybe start at a certain time over the weekend/Monday morning?

In my experience the removers will just get on with it as best they can.

ThinWomansBrain · 16/08/2024 22:17

so you paid for a space on Monday but expect it to be kept free from Friday onwards?

I do not expect the spaces to be kept free from Friday. I do expect that my neighbours will be given adequate notice to keep those spaces clear on Monday. That is the whole point of the council putting up notices in advance. [Facepalm]

Yes. Does that include dropping my piano on my neighbour's rather nice Jaguar?

Does the suspension start just after midnight on Monday morning? Or a little later in the morning eg from 9am? I'm just wondering if they will put notice up first thing Monday morning and expect cars to be moved by the time specified.

If not and the spaces are still occupied,I suppose the only thing you can do is ring the offices early Monday morning. I doubt it will do any good emailing or calling over the weekend as I wouldn't have thought there would be anyone there.

If it’s in the way, then I guess.

Slightly, just slightly, unfair on my neighbour, who was never told about the suspension because the council have failed to put up the usual signs.

How early do they usually put the signs up?

Round here they go up more or less on the morning for an evening suspension so id assume the day before. But then again, I'm not talking about a residential area.

As I said, I'm in central London. So residential. A bit.

Different council but when I did similar the signs went up at least 4 days before (maybe a week, it was a while
ago so can’t remember) and they put a sign and tape alongside the road marking out the stretch to be kept free.
My removal company asked me for proof of it once done.
Good luck with the move, it’s stressful and irritating when you try to do things properly and get met with these hurdles. After all that my removal company turned up 2 days early and were moaning about the cars in the way! I did have to send them away.

Do you know they weren’t told? Surely they don’t just rely on posters? Would they not write to the residents affected?

TwinklyAmberOrca · 16/08/2024 23:01

Could you put your own signs up so they know to move for Monday?

Make it clear that the council have forgotten to put the notice up and you would want a piano dropping onto their cars...

Putting up signs is how they do it here. But this time they failed. And lol at your suggestion of writing to the residents; this is central London, they'd have to send out thousands of letters.

How big is your removal van? That thousands of residents are affected?

Aside from being sarky, what do you actually hope to achieve from this? The council is presumably now shut. Someone fucked up, sort it out Monday morning. Or don’t move.

WonderingWanda · 16/08/2024 23:14

Presumably you speak to your neighbours if you know they've gone on holiday, didn't you mention it to them?

My point was clear: people have parked their cars for the weekend and gone away. I could put up signs, Yahweh could put up signs, Allah and all his prophets could put up signs: it's too fucking late.

This is London. I've no idea who my neighbours are. I do know that one of them, wherever they are and whoever they are, has a rather nice Jaguar.

I was, and this was explicit, asking for advice. Obviously you have none to give.

Can't you tell your neighbours?

Well I can see from your snarky-ass responses to others that you don't talk to your neighbours - so I guess you'll just have to deal with it on Monday.

Chocolatelabradorsarethebest · 16/08/2024 23:20

I’m sure if you put notes on the cars people will see and move them/others will know who the cars belong too and tell them.

With your rude and snarky replies to people on here trying to help I’m sure your neighbours will bend over backwards to see the back of you.

Karma I think is at play here.

ThinWomansBrain · 16/08/2024 23:25

your neighbours are probably relieved.
or will be when they see the notice.

Because I'm concerned about my neighbour's Jaguar?

No, probably because I don’t live in central London. City of Westminster if it’s relevant.
