I've recently put a complaint in with my doctors for a rather emotional experience for me. I went with confidence to a doctor I had never seen before in regards of mass amount of weight loss. I'm a 5ft 6 25 year old who now weights 7stone unintentionally. When he proceeded to ask me if I had money to buy food. And told me to eat junk food until I gain weight. Made me feel a fool for booking an appointment. Aibu for complaining? I feel like any unintentional weight loss requires a deeper looking into? Or am I wrong? Was his response valid or am I correct to feel offended.

That's not okay. Any significant weight lose should be investigated. Hope you have seen another doctor since.

@mummytotwoxo

i wouldn't waste time feeling offended. I would book another appointment ASAP though. I hope it's nothing serious!!

Ratfinkstinkypink · 16/08/2024 19:34

It was not an OK comment and you are right to raise a concern.

Happyher · 16/08/2024 19:35

Was it definitely a doctor or was it a physician associate? I would ask for a further appointment and take a friend with you if possible. It definitely needs exploring further

It was a legitimate GP unfortunately.

If you haven't been intentionally losing weight, doing lots of unusual exercise or anything else that would explain the weight loss, then absolutely go back. My ex MIL lost weight unintentionally, she had cancer. My sister lost weight unintentionally, she had cancer. I'm not saying this to worry you OP, but simply to make it clear that this could be a cause of your weight loss, in which case seeing a doctor as a matter of urgency, could be the difference between life and death. Of course, it could be nothing, and I very much hope that's the case, but I certainly wouldn't allow myself to be brushed off like this!

Did the GP ask about any other symptoms? - pain? - loss of appetite? - blood loss? etc. If he launched straight into the eat junk food advice then this is very remiss indeed.

Ponoka7 · 16/08/2024 19:39

Are you logging your calories to make sure you are eating enough? Do that over the weekend and if so, phone your GP on Monday.

Absolutely nothing unfortunately, I told him I'm struggling with tiredness and I'm finding it difficult to function recently but he just said it's my anemia causing the tiredness, he wasn't particularly interested in speaking further about it, I explained to him my diet isn't particularly healthy as it is, I eat all dairy, cheeses, sugary drinks, full fat milks, meat, he just told me to add extra fatness to everything I'm eating like creams and sugars..

I went to a doctor at a similar age for the same issue. He laughed and said "MOST women would be PLEASED!" He told me to stop worrying about it.

It was a while later that I read about sudden unintentional weight loss is one of the symptoms of Hypothyroidism and turns out that's what I had.

Not officially but this is my plan over the weekend, to me it feels like I'm eating what I normally eat day to day.

I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and Graves' disease when I was 14 years old, I was discharged stable at the age of 18. He must had read my notes and recognised this, but clearly wasn't much bothered

That is shocking. Hope you are OK get a second consultation with someone that is not an idiot

DecafDodger · 16/08/2024 19:57

Your Graves is probably flaring up again, go back and insist on a blood test.

vodkaredbullgirl · 16/08/2024 19:59

You need a blood test to see if it has come back.

ThatFunFinch · 16/08/2024 20:14

Ignore my post, most possibly hyperthyroidism starting again - get a diff dr to do bloods
