AIBU to delay taking new meds until after an overseas trip?

I have a long term health condition. I had an appointment with my consultant this week who suggested we try a new medication, but my GP has to prescribe it.

There's a shortage of this medication, so it might take weeks (or more) to get hold of it.

And there are often unpleasant side effects from this medication in the first few weeks.

I'm going on holiday to the USA in a couple of weeks and considering not requesting a prescription for these new medications until after, because:

  • I'll have to inform my insurance company of a change to my medication and don't want anything to scupper my trip
  • I don't want to be dealing with medication side effects when on holiday.

I'm thinking of telling my GP not to issue it until after my holiday - my condition hasn't changed so I won't have to inform insurance (I don't think). AIBU?

Two things -

  1. Your condition has already changed because the consultant has requested it.
  2. Fair enough to start it after your holiday to avoid the induction period side effects.

You might as well have the prescription waiting to start when you get back - if there's that much of a shortage, chances aren't great for it arriving beforehand anyway. Your only issue would be if it's a controlled substance, as you wouldn't be able to have your current medication prescribed at the same time.

Good point about controlled substance. I don't think it is (it's available over there) but might be worth checking.
