Bristol University Hall of Residence

My boy got his place at Bristol University to read Economics, and today received his accommodation offer. His accommodation is a new build, and will not be ready until 14 Sept - the week after 'welcome week'. (we used to call it Freshers week...well, actually, we used to preface it with an activity, but let's not go there). We're quite happy with the accommodation, but upset he will miss this crucial opportunity to make friends and learn the ropes.

The university is no help - no offer to help find alternative accommodation for a week or even just to try and put kids in a similar situation in touch so that they can try and work out a place to stay as a group.

I don't quite know what to do - hive mind, all ideas welcome! Anyone else in this situation?

It's not the end of the world. He has three years to make friends. Freshers week is just one big piss up. I missed it because I was not interested and still had amazing time at uni.
ETA: there will likely a Facebook group of students looking for accommodation. There was at my uni

There is a thread about this on WIWIKAU that might be helpful OP

Lets hope its ready for 14th Sept. Could he go for the end of the week and stay in a cheap hotel for a couple of nights. Everyone else in the accom will be in the same boat - is there a uni social media page?

The week before seems early?

I’ll have to check Exeter. Well get my child to do it.

I hope your son sorts something out.

Bristol is full of short term shared house sub lets.

Find some appropriate Facebook groups and there will definitely be somewhere he can stay for a week.

If no-one in his halls of residence are there - they'll all be starting from the same position and can play catch up together.

My daughters going to Trent and can’t get to her accommodation until 15th sept.
Will soon make friends, going to be so many new starters and societies etc.

My DD is in the same situation (although doing History and Spanish). She needs to be there for welcome week as she wants to join choirs which sign up that week.

She's joined an instagram group of people at that accommodation - if you send me a message and let me know your DS's instagram name then she can add him.

Air BnB if he can find others in a similar situation? Cheap travelodge? It's not ideal but at least everyone who he will be living with will be moving in at the same time

Seeline · 16/08/2024 19:09

Welcome week at DDs uni wasn't just a piss up. It was introductory lectures, library induction etc
Presumably all the Freshers in other accommodation will be able to take part in these activities.
I'd be looking at a Travel lodge or Airbnb for a week.

Hope you get sorted. If it is the Metal Works it does look lovely though - it will be a huge bonding experience for those students when they finally do get to move in!

Also, just wondering - Bristol have moved their term forward a week (maybe why this happened), but it looks as if there is almost a half term week in October. Anybody know if students generally stay in Bristol for that week or come home?
