Cleaner drank the juice, ate the salmon and charged her phone

I have a cleaner who has been coming for 2hrs a week for approx a year. She is unreliable, often texting the day before with a wide selection of reasons as to why she can't make it, and she doesn't always do a great job. I've been thinking about getting rid of her for a while but I have a lot of guilt around having a cleaner in the first place, as it feels like such a luxury and I feel like a bit of a snob for having one. I've come home whilst she's been there before and seen her charging her devices, noticed that the cordial seems to have been drunk and a couple of weeks ago, I'm sure (but can't be 100% certain) that she finished of the smoked salmon from the fridge. Today, my kids marked a line on the juice bottles as a little experiment and lo and behold, I've come home to find not only has she drunk the cordial, she's finished it AND put the empty bottle on the top of the bin.
Am I being unreasonable to be furious and feel like she's taking the mick now or am I overreacting to some minor issues which I should overlook because a little bit of juice and a little bit of electricity here and there won't kill me???

well I have done, depending on whether I was thirsty/hungry or not! But my point is I wouldn’t just help myself.

I know. I tell my helpers.

I don't think many people buy individual anything unless for children's lunches, so it is pretty obvious. On your rounds, do you see many people without children who have everything in portions? I joined Costco and you can buy so many convenient items: little packs of two biscuits, for instance, and packs of 24 juices.

Did I mention I have helpers every day?

When you have a nuero diverse mind and something doesn't add up you keep over thinking it until it does😂

csigeek · 19/08/2024 17:00

The phone charging and drink I wouldn’t be bothered by. The salmon is a crossed line though. If she’s not doing a good job on top of that and being unreliable I’d get rid.

Fynoderee · 19/08/2024 21:16

Cleaner here.

I’m rarely offered a drink by clients. I take my own.
When my phone was struggling to hold its charge recently, I took my own battery pack. I’ve upgraded now.

This isn’t because I think it’s wrong to have a glass of water or use a socket (I mean, no one complains when I plug my vac into their sockets!) but I know people will complain over the smallest thing and I’m just not interested in going there.

If the cleaning is crap, that’s why you cease services. Silly games, drawing on bottles, just turn the situation into tit for tat.

Ruffpuff · 19/08/2024 21:29

Let’s teach the children to begrudge the lowlife cleaner for helping herself to some squash.

The help don’t deserve such luxuries.

It's got to the point now where I dare not tell these posters that my carers have permission to actually connect their phones to my wifi as well as charge them, such is the criticism I have gotten from some posters.

I don't think many posters on here realise cleaners are like precious gold dust.

Get rid ASAP. That happened to me as well. Year's of experience has taught me when the honeymoon period wears off they start taking liberties. I believe in treating people as I'd like to be treated so I'd always offer tea/coffee sandwich or snack on arrival. Still doing that. But 3/4 months later the slap dash cleaning starts, and reasons to leave early or not come at all start.
Past experience with those I'd given keys to revealed small petty stealing, ie open bottles of perfume , alcohol etc. Wised up since.
Personal circumstances dictate need for help, or I'd happily do without.

On two occasions I have employed companies who clean houses and businesses. One was British, the other a trio from Brazil. Do not use these types of cleaning companies. I only employed them when my helper was on holiday.

If you live alone, they outnumber you.

The first I had over two days giving the kitchen a deep clean. It wasn't cleaned. They sorted through the cupboards and threw things away without asking me. They wanted paying up front, which was a big mistake, I never made again. They were almost local - five miles away. I took ''after photos'' which showed the same dirt and grease as were before they started. When I complained, there was ground glass on my drive the next day.

The second was a company headed by a Brazilian woman and the other two did not speak English. I left them to it. When they arrived, they had a new Henry and a bag of stuff with cleaning sprays sticking out of it. I assumed they brought their own to use, because that is what the ad said, and wondered why the bag was full. They had no difficulty carrying it. When they left that day I discovered they had used my vacuum cleaner and my cleaning stuff, and wish I had looked more closely at what was in the bags when they went, but I was not sure if I had the power to search.

On the first day they came I went into the kitchen and there was a carrier bag with some of my utensils in it. When I looked at it, the lad told me I had two of some things and did I want them. I said I did and made them put them back.

When they went, to return the next day I found that they had moved every piece of furniture and put it in another place in the same room. The furniture wasn't polished, and the cobwebs were still there. I am disabled. I think they were searching for money or valuables, because there is no other reason for that. When they came back the next day I had them moving all the furniture - sofas and chairs - back where they were. I don't always use the wheelchair indoors, but gave that as a reason why furniture had to stay. After they finished putting it back, I told them to go, and that I wasn't paying them for the day before either. The two days was £300.

They didn't receive a penny of it. They were not pleased. I think that because they were not UK nationals (I found out later) they accepted it. I didn't have glass on the drive that time.

It was a few years ago, before the lock down. My new carer came in 2019 and stayed with me until May, after the inoperable cancer diagnosis.

I will NEVER employ any of these companies again. They were the first and last.

Permission is the keyword here. You gave them permission, they didn’t just do it. The whole thread is about that one word, permission. No permission = no drink, food or charging.

Iam so sorry for the nightmare experience you've been subjected to. Empathise with you completely. They do take advantage of sole occupants and it's not always convenient for others to come over as "another presence in the home".
So far I have found that using Check a Trade has bought forward positive results but when a cleaner becomes a regular after 4 sessions they start talking liberties. Never ever exchange phone numbers. I recently used an agency from Check a Trade and when I needed a cleaner I went back to the agency. So far so good for now.

I used a similar set up. (Bark) They bear no responsibility at all. When I told them, they reminded me of that.

I know there are some sites which are very good. ''My job Quote'' was one I used this year to get my soakaway unblocked and my boiler flue fixed. I have also used Shiply. It is an amazing site for any transport possibilities.

They transport goods from one location to another, and are tapped into the URL numbers on eBay, so that you can buy bulky heavy things on eBay. You start to bid on an item (I bid on a brilliant mattress), then post the job on Shiply, giving the URL number, or if it is yourself, the dimensions and weight, and it goes out to all transporters of goods.

Then you watch the offers come in until the auction is finished and pick the cheapest with the best service. Never failed yet. Brilliant idea.

It’s a workplace - you can charge your phone and have a cup of tea at work. This is a given in offices and other places (eg a home) where electricity and kitchen space is available.

Employers who do not allow this are pillocks

Everything apart from water, milk and alcohol is juice.

The word "Squash" annoys me so much.

The point the PP is making though, is it isn’t fresh fruit juice, it’s affordable squash.

TBH using juice as a catch all term for fresh juice, squash and soda is at lot more annoying in its inefficiency
