My 5 year old has lost 5 milk teeth already!

He’s going to be 6 in October , he’s already lost 5 milk teeth. 3 adult teeth have grown back at the bottom. Today he lost on of his top front teeth. The one next to it is wobbly too!
I think only two other kids in his class have lost just one tooth. I don’t remember losing my top ones until I was about 7.
Is this unusual?!

I don't have any answers for you but following if anyone else does.

Did he get his baby teeth early?

My baby is 8 months and he has 8 teeth already and two more poking through, which is loads compared to what I read is normal. I wonder if he'll lose them early too. Following for tips from mums with older kids

Utini · 16/08/2024 17:45

On the earlier side of normal but I don't think it's that unusual, my daughter lost her first 8 baby teeth by the end of Reception, she's a September birthday so one of the oldest.

She got her first tooth at 7 months but had 8 by 8 months - they all came at once and all fell out in the space of a few months too!

Anecdotally, as a ks1 teacher, I think children are losing their baby teeth earlier than they used to. When I started teaching you’d have a handful of the children in a y1 class who had lost any teeth by the end of the year. Now it is only 1 or 2 who haven’t lost any by the time they go to y2.

Crazycatlady79 · 16/08/2024 17:47

Not sure, but Twin 1 had lost 5 teeth before she turned 6 - including 1 top front - and Twin 2 had lost 4 (all lower).

cocobeaner · 16/08/2024 17:49

My four year old has lost two bottom ones and the adult teeth are in and has another wobbly one on the top.

I asked the dentist about it because I was a bit worried (I have two other children and they didn't lose any teeth until 5/6 at the earliest) and she said it was a bit earlier than the norm but nothing to worry about. Weirdly it's girls I know who have lost teeth earlier than boys, my other two children are boys too.

That's what happened to my eldest. By the time he was 12 months he only had two teeth and then got loads in the space of a month. Then he lost about 8 teeth practically in one go at about age 6 or so - so he had a bit of a bad patch for eating and photos!

FoxtrotSkarloey · 16/08/2024 18:02

No idea what's normal, but DC1 has recently turned six and hasn't lost any yet.

MammaTill2Pojkar · 16/08/2024 18:14

My 7yo 1.5mo has lost 8 milk teeth and has 10 adult teeth (including 4 permanent molars grown in behind his milk molars), he got his milk teeth quite early too, cut his first teeth at 14weeks.

Auburngal · 16/08/2024 18:25

My ex was late in losing baby teeth. His adoptive mum said he lost his first tooth aged 8.5.

A former colleague had twins - boy and girl and they were 8 when they started to lose their teeth. They only had about 4 teeth when they were one.

Yuja · 16/08/2024 18:27

My DD had lost loads by 5, they started falling out at 4y 8 months. She had her baby teeth v early and all her adult teeth by her 10th birthday. No drama - she's almost 12 now and perfectly normal! No dentist ever commented on it

MammaTill2Pojkar · 16/08/2024 18:34

Looking through my photos he lost both his top incisors at 6y 1.5mo and had 6 adult teeth at that point. He lost his bottom lateral incisors a little under 6.5yo and top adult incisors were already growing in (so 6 milk lost, 8 adult grown/growing). Looks like he's losing them in pairs around every 6 months atm 😅

dbeuowlxb173939 · 16/08/2024 18:38

It's early but not abnormally early. Did he get his teeth early?
My DD got her first teeth at 4 months old and lost them quite early too. She had lost all her baby teeth by age 10 which the dentist did say was on the early side.
Mention it to the dentist next time you go for a checkup

bryceQ · 16/08/2024 18:40

My son is 6 in January and he has lost 4 milk teeth and the bottom big ones are up and top half way down. He's the youngest around us from what I can see. It does seem very young! Do you remember your little one getting teeth early?

pointythings · 16/08/2024 18:42

It's early, but not extremely so - both of mine had lost all their baby front teeth and replaced them well before age 7. All molars and canines done by age 11. I was the same, back then (70s) it was unusual so I think it's genetic.

We all have excellent teeth.

Stressfordays · 16/08/2024 18:45

My 6 year old has lost 8 teeth, she seems to lose them in 4s. So lost her top and bottoms within a couple of months. Then the last month has lost the incisors top and bottoms (I assume coz her big teeth have grown in fully and pushed them out)

I don't remember when my older 2 lost them, I know my eldest is 12 and still has some baby teeth though and the dentist wasn't concerned.

Summerx · 16/08/2024 18:49

My 4 year old DD has lost two bottom milk teeth, both new teeth started growing just before the teeth fell out, I think this is called shark teeth or something? She also has two wobbly teeth at the top and her 6 year molars are already growing through. Dentist said all is fine though it is earlier than the average age.

Jxtina86 · 16/08/2024 19:07

My DD lost her bottom two teeth in Feb (she was 4) within 2 weeks of each other. There were already teeth poking through when they came out! She saw the dentist a few weeks later and they said all was fine and nothing to worry about.

WhatMe123 · 16/08/2024 19:13

Dd1 has been the same, she got her baby teeth early and has a lot of adult teeth already through at 7 🙈 she needs two milk teeth removing to make way for the adult teeth so be prepared for some intervention. We've also been advised she's likely to need braces for over crowding as getting teeth fast with a small jaw obviously is problematic. I think it's genetic as I know y ku said my brother was the same and and was too. My other dd had all her milk teeth by 2 so assume she'll be the same

Flibflobflibflob · 16/08/2024 19:16

Eldest lost her first one at 4, regular dental check ups, fluoride applied etc, dentist was happy with her teeth, nothing to worry about.

Peccary · 16/08/2024 19:37

Mine started teething at 4 months but didn't lose her first until 6 and a half! Still only lost 4 at just turned 7 so early teething doesn't always = early loss

Arrivapercy · 16/08/2024 19:45

Ds lost i think 4 at age 5. He is very tall and thin with big feet like my DH. Now at age 7.5 he is 135cm tall, and has lost all 8 front teeth and the adult teeth I think are mostly through.

I do think some kids do lose them earlier, i think i lost mine at more like 6.5.

My daughter is 5 and had just lost her sixth baby tooth. She has two adult teeth fully grown in at the bottom, two top teeth half grown in and two at the sides at the bottom which are pushing the 7/8th baby teeth out. She had three teeth by the time she was four months old so (like me) she has just got them earlier. They have fallen out in the order they first grew in as a baby.
