To ask for help choosing a dress for daughter's 18th?

My daughter turns 18 soon and is having a party. She has specified a "white" theme - so we all need to wear white. I have no idea why - apparently it "looks good on the photos". Anyway, I've told her white isn't the most flattering of colours on a 39 year old mum of two, but my protests were largely dismissed! Of course they were, my size 6 tiny daughter looks fabulous in white 😂

Anyway, I've narrowed it down to 2 options - just need help choosing between the two. Apparently pattern is acceptable and she has "approved" both of these.

So... which one shall I wear, option 1 (white & pink), or option 2 (white & black)?

My shoes will be white, and I have a black blazer style jacket to go over it.

Depends on your figure, neither hide anything. I wouldn't wear them

whichdresshelpplease · 15/08/2024 21:57

I'm 5' 8" and a size 10. Admittedly I'm not as toned as I used to be, but I think I could just about pull it off. Just wondering which is nicer for a party - I feel like the black and white one isn't fancy enough?

No 2 looks appropriate, no1 looks like it would slip down and be annoying.

Milkandtwosugarsplease · 15/08/2024 22:01

I love the first one.

whichdresshelpplease · 15/08/2024 22:04

@Milkandtwosugarsplease
I'm leaning towards that one actually! Seems a bit more 'dressy'.

Agree with first one! Enjoy 🎉

Threetrees745 · 15/08/2024 22:10

I wouldn't buy anything from shein. Cheap rubbish that will never last and just end up in a landfill. Also ia lot of fast fashion is made by exploiting poor people and children in 3rd world countries.

Threetrees745 · 15/08/2024 22:13

Why don't you look at something like this instead. A bit more elegant, it will last years and it's in the sale.

@Threetrees745
That's lovely but it's sold out in all sizes unfortunately!

Pink! Will look lovely with a black blazer over it.

Myfavouriteflowers · 15/08/2024 22:50

I really like the pink material but I really don't like the strapless style. Always looks uncomfortable and as though it will slip down.
I like the style of the second dress but the black pattern is a bit nondescript.
Do the shoes have to be white? I don't really like white shoes.
Blimey I sound a very negative person!

rayofsunshine86 · 15/08/2024 22:52

The pink one will ruin the photos that are supposed to look so good. I'd go with the white one with black bits.

can I ask why you think the pink one will ruin the photos? 😂

I like the white and pink one. Nothing wrong with the black and white one though. Why wear a black blazer? If you want to hide arms, I would go with a little white cardigan instead.

That is a good point.

I reckon I might have written that a bit too rudely, whoops! I meant it's a nice dress but has too much colour 😆 it'll ruin the white party look.

GreenFlamingo11 · 16/08/2024 09:50

I don't think I'd want my mum wearing either of those tbh, but if she has approved them then go ahead. I like the black and white one more but I can't imagine a blazer will really go with either of them.

circular1985 · 16/08/2024 09:52

I prefer the first one. I'm 42 and would wear it.

what about this:

Not sure about the quality of New Look clothes tho? If I’m wearing white I try to go for the best quality fabrics as it looks much better on

At 5ft 8 and size 10 I reckon you could pull off practically anything. I’m not a fan of hiding assets, it’s 2024, model body confidence in front of your young daughter

Danniotley · 16/08/2024 10:05

Karen Millen has some beautiful white dresses. More expensive but likely to last longer
