Taking food from a hotel breakfast buffet- cheeky??

Was chatting with Brother and SIL about their upcoming holiday. They've got a long drive with 2 young DCs, so they've booked a chain hotel with free buffet breakfast part way along (to break up the drive.) DM said "Oh good, don't forget to make sandwiches for the drive later.".
This led to a whole family breakdown of what it is/isn't cheeky to do at a breakfast buffet 😂...

  • DM would happily take tupperware with her and fill up because 'it's been paid for' (I don't think she does take tupperware, I think it was a figure of speech!)
  • DH said he's too embarrassed to take anything more than a banana for later.
  • DSIL confessed that she can't resist taking pots of jam

I just wondered what everyone thought- Is it unreasonable to take from the buffet breakfast for 'later'?

Well in Belfast a round of sandwiches is two slices with various fillings.

Contrary to a round of bread which is one slice😆

A Belgian hotel I stayed at this year specifically asked people NOT to take the fruit to eat other than at breakfast. Oddly they didn't also have a notice asking people not to take the bread, cheeses, and meats 🤔I didn't see anyone making sandwiches though.

Nothing better than a yummy breakfast lunch on your villa terrace. Saved money on £20 burgers for lunch which none of us wanted. A nice roll and ham/ cheese, some yogurt, cake, and fruit. We provided the crisps. Glass of wine. Joy

I mean dinner on the hotel one night was £200 so I think they can cope with subbing about £5 of food

“She probably means serviette”, that’s reassuring. I have never done AI , and don’t think I ever will if they don’t have proper napkins.

🙂

😀

gotta have those standards…

i haven’t done AI either, i don’t eat meat or breakfast so its a bit wasted on me 😀

We are at a hotel now, I take an apple most days for my son to have later. We are in India and I dont trust fruit outside the hotel 🙈 we have taken some pastries a few days too, but we ask and they provide a box for this. We haven’t taken anything more and wouldn’t want to 🙈 they are very accommodating here but I wouldn’t want to take more anyway.

Very embarrassing to stock up: are you so poor that you have to double up from the hotel buffet?

I think it is one of those things where what is culturally acceptable varies from country to country. As mentioned some places put out paper bags but now on the continent I think you are seeing more notices saying 'please do not remove items from the breakfast buffet - packed lunches can be provided' or similar. I've also seen places where you can pay a small amount, 5 euros or so, to take lunch from the breakfast buffet.

That's a good idea

supersop60 · 17/08/2024 06:35

I think it's rude and cf. You have paid for one meal - breakfast. To take any extra for other meals is stealing.
(If you are in a place as pp have said where they encourage you to take more, that's different.)
I work at a school where teachers' lunch is free, and there are clear signs saying to take one item for dessert. I see so many staff taking biscuits or fruit 'for later'. Just icky.

xxSideshowAuntSallyxx · 17/08/2024 06:57

I'll take fruit, and muffins/cakes to have later. Occasionally I've taken a little pot of jam or honey (if it's those little jars).

I can't eat much at breakfast other than toast and cereal so whilst others are stuffing their faces with everything at breakfast time, I don't see a problem with me taking a couple of slices of cake to have at 11am and a banana and an a apple to have at lunch.

But toast and cereal at breakfast is a normal breakfast. You are taking fruit, muffins, cake, jam - all of which are in the hotel's budget for other people's breakfast.
Go and buy your own lunch - youve already eaten the breakfast you paid for.

Mil3nnial · 17/08/2024 07:45

I sometimes bring a mini jam or Nutella sachet for my DC or I make a muffin for later

I wouldn't take a lunch

But it's also in the budget for my breakfast just because I choose not to be a greedy pig at 8am doesn't mean I should miss out. It's not like I'm taking a whole meal, a muffin and a piece of fruit is hardly a lot.

People go back for seconds, people eat a cooked breakfast plus cake, toast and croissants. Why is me taking a muffin out of the restaurant any different?

You said above that you were taking a couple of slices of cake, a banana and an apple.
Eating a hearty breakfast is not being a greedy pig.

rookiemere · 17/08/2024 08:09

@xxSideshowAuntSallyxx is it really necessary to try and justify yourself by calling those who actually eat breakfast at breakfast time "greedy pigs"?

No wonder people end up with eating disorders if they grow up with messages like this.

It's not just this poster, you can see it throughout the thread, some posters disgusted with the concept that people can dare ti enjoy a hearty breakfast, probably because of their own internal dialogue on the matter.

A greedy pig? For eating a hotel breakfast?
You should honestly be ashamed of yourself for talking like that.

BigAnne · 17/08/2024 09:04

@Nannyogg134 scummy behaviour. Low level looting.

BigDahliaFan · 17/08/2024 09:13

Nothing to add really, beyond when I worked in a youth hostel we left out brown paper bags for people to make up butties as they would have anyway...

But this is the most entertaining thread on such an innocuous subject!

And I rather admire the European looking husband swiping Prosecco while his wife used the facilities...

Jayne35 · 17/08/2024 09:23

I just spoke to some one about this last week, we were talking about cruises and I said I like to try restaurants in ports, he was shocked at why I would pay for food on an all inclusive cruise. Apparently he either takes lunch from the breakfast buffet or makes sure they are back by lunch time.

The only ones with real problems are those who call people greedy pigs for eating a hotel breakfast.

I suspect this is why they would rather steal food and eat it alone later when no other people might be watching.

xsquared · 17/08/2024 09:56

It's been a while since I've been to a hotel with all inclusive breakfast, but now I know why breakfast is so expensive. They account for this sort of behaviour.

I think if the hotel are only with people taking extra for later, then no one has any business to judge.

This thread has been very amusing.

ErrolTheDragon · 17/08/2024 09:56

When we've stayed in Norway we booked what they called 3/4 board, which was the hotel providing paper bags to make up sandwiches from the breakfast buffet - it was a really outdoorsy place and the expectation was that no one would be back for lunch, but we did pay extra above half-board for that. Maybe that's what they were doing?

Norway seems like such a sensible country, that's a very good idea.

Packetofcrispsplease · 17/08/2024 09:58

We usually have self catering holidays but we had a delayed flight once and had to spend the night at a Holiday Inn Express.
I watched people pile plates high and go back for more .
i can’t eat like that , I had juice , coffee , eggs on toast but took a banana , a muffin and as I was leaving I noticed people were taking coffee to go in the takeaway cups provided so I also took a coffee from the machine in a takeaway cup to have in our room .
i draw the line at making up sandwiches 🥪😆

Whynottrythis · 17/08/2024 10:07

I did this as a broke teenager when inter-railing.

I wouldn't do it now. Or maybe just an apple.

I will take fruit and a pastry or mini muffin. If I’m with my (3yo) daughter I might take a roll and a piece of cheese because it’s really hard to find a simple lunch when out and about that she will eat.

Im fine with this because I’m petite and barely eat 1/4 of what I see other people eating at buffet breakfasts. I’ll have some toast, coffee and maybe a boiled egg or piece of cheese. I can’t eat that much at breakfast but might need a little something at 11am. I’m basically subsidising everyone who fills their boots for the day.

Me too , small stature and a bit of a grazer so egg and toast is the most I can eat in one go 😆 I take banana and a small pastry for later
