To not pay cleaners when...

They've broken my tap! It was perfectly fine when I left the house. Returned after they'd been in to clean to find it literally hanging off. They are insistent it was like that when they arrived. I know it wasn't. Thing is I'm going to need to get a plumber out. I owe them two session's money which probably won't even cover the plumbers costs but why should I foot the bill when they've broken something? Then again, I feel bad. They probably depend on the money... things are tight for us too though, so... what would you do?! Tbh the denial of culpability is annoying me more than anything.

I'd pay them but find a new cleaner

Whatevershallidowithmylife · 15/08/2024 19:11

Well unless you think they’ve hit it with a hammer then it probably did break as soon as they touched it surely. And no you cannot refuse to pay them provided they cleaned as required. You need to claim on your insurance.

Icanwalkintheroom · 15/08/2024 19:11

Well you shouldn’t owe them for previous sessions. You should always pay promptly.

Ive still paid my cleaner on the odd occasion something got broken (2 things, 2 different cleaners). But they’ve always been mortified & offered to pay to repair / replace. If you’re sure they’ve caused the damage & aren’t owning up, that would really annoy me.

How do you break a tap by cleaning it?

driedapricots101 · 15/08/2024 19:13

I'm totally sure they broke it. They've been 'heavy handed' in the past & I've always let little breakages go. I owe them because I pay monthly for fortnightly cleans 🙄

I think you need to pay them for cleaning.

It’s up to you if you want to claim through their insurance for damage caused (and not worth it because you won’t get anywhere). I’d just get a new cleaner moving forward.

missmollygreen · 15/08/2024 19:15

You pay them, Then claim from their insurance if you can prove it was them who broke the tap.

LaraThot · 15/08/2024 19:19

What sort of tap are we talking? A kitchen horses cock affair or a bathroom quarter turn thingy? Cant see anyone claiming on insurance as excess is usually excessive.

Molga · 15/08/2024 19:19

I think if they did break it by cleaning it, it was likely hanging on by a thread. I broke my sink waste recently when cleaning it. I didn't do anything wrong, I used completely normal pressure on a fitting that was virtually corroded through already.

Not great that they are denying it of course. I wonder if their insurance is not all it should be.

How do you break a tap?

Tap dancing?

Can we have a photo of said tap?

A kitchen horses cock - omg I’m dying

Have you never made a mistake and cost your employer money? You should pay them for the two session. What you do after that is up to you.

ACynicalDad · 15/08/2024 19:30

Chances are that the tap was ready to break and if they broke it it wasn't due to brute force, it's on you and you must pay. If you don't want them anymore that's another thing.

Mrsttcno1 · 15/08/2024 19:37

Of course you have to pay them for the work they did. The tap is a completely separate issue, it is illegal to refuse to pay for work done.

Fair point but actually no I haven't.. also thinking about it when they've broken things in the past they've offered to pay for them, so...
anyway, I appreciate the reoccurring point that the work is separate to the breakage. Guess we'll take it in the chin.
