Suddenly getting UTIs

I'd love some advice from anyone please!

Almost 40 and for the first time in my life getting UTIs.

It's generally happening after rough(ish) sex but this hasn't been an issue at any other point for the past 20 years of DH and I doing the same.

If anything we're a hell of a lot cleaner than we were in our early 20s as with kids in the house sex is predictably at bedtime so we've both washed beforehand and I'm always good at making sure to wee afterwards.

Anyone else had the same? What can I do to stop them?

I really don't want to be scared to have sex on holiday etc for fear of a UTI.

Have you had medical treatment for any of the infections?

I had this problem, and used to treat with cranberry juice, hot baths etc, but they kept recurring after sex - this went on for months. I was at my wits end.

One course of Nitrofurantoin sorted me out. Haven't had one since.

Thanks for the reply.

Yes have had nitrofantoin twice now. 😓

You're probably a bit young but I think perimenopause can cause increased UTIs, so maybe worth considering if you have any other symptoms that point to that?

I discovered consuming too much tea can cause recurrent UTI's, it was only through conversation with a friend, also going through menopause who had made the link. I immediately reduced my tea intake and it made a difference. I now limit myself to maximum of two cups of tea per day.

I'm very annoyed about this because I love a cup of tea.

@NurseButtercup1 I had a similar issue, but switched to decaffeinated tea which made a huge difference.

Are you peri? Or if not, could this be the first sign of it?

Worth asking your GP about vaginal oestrogen.
