To say hybrid is the best of both worlds?

Positivenancy · 15/08/2024 11:50

Just that really. It started working hybrid. And I tend to do three days on site and two days at home. I’m really enjoying the two days at home for various reasons.
The main ones being that
-it saves me on petrol.
-I don’t have to get up as early, yes I can log on earlier and get more done (and then I have the option of logging off early)
-I can claim tax back for the days I work at home for my Internet and electricity costs
-My DC also use this day as a relaxing day, they are 8 and 11 so they are in no way demanding or distracting. They just choose to have screen time, play Lego, colour etc (and I don’t feel bad because the weather is awful today and they have been at Camp all week so far!)
-I have also managed to get two loads of Washing done, it literally takes me a minute to fill the washing machine and turn it on 🙌- so that makes less to do with the weekend.
-There’s actually less distractions at home less people coming up to me asking me questions etc.

Anyone else have any more bonuses for WFH? 😊 I’m taking an early lunch at the
moment because I skipped breakfast 🙌

omg be ready for all the

"it's not work if you're able to put on a wash" type comments.

I have worked from home since before it became acceptable, I had a project based in Ireland back in around 2009 that opened my eyes and spoilt me. I'm a natural recluse, and right now I am a bit trapped in my job which is 100% wfh because any new job wouldn't be 😆

Benefits include all you listed, also I have 3 screens, I have jabra speaker (no headset or spread ears for calls), I can have my room at the temperature I want, my work environment is my own, my pooches being close by mean easy access to cuddles when needed... just too many pro's to mention! I'd rather retire and live frugally than return to an office.

TowellingLife · 15/08/2024 12:10

Totally the best. I used to work a lot from home (from 2012 onwards - the summer olympics was in my first month of the new job). Amusingly my employer later insisted on more office time. And then was surprised at leavers / retirement.

It just creates such a lovely balance to be able to have that flexibility. I with no detriment to the job- at all.

sweetpickle2 · 15/08/2024 12:10

Are you writing an article OP?

Cobblersorchard · 15/08/2024 12:15

It’s lovely isn’t it. I work 4 days, 2 office and 2 at home and I love it. I like the office but also love the flexibility of home, I eat a cooked breakfast (eggs on toast usually), take a lunchtime walk and get the laundry done plus can drop off and pick up from nursery. I still need childcare as DD is too little but once she is older I won’t need as many holiday clubs.

My commute is an hour each way but doing it twice a week is nice and I am happy to be there as it’s not every day. I feel like I have a lovely balanced life.

Shawdee · 15/08/2024 12:44

I'm full time WFH and I don't ever see myself going back into an office really. I have a home office, I do the type of work that I zone out and become engrossed so don't miss people around me. Super flexible, lots of job satisfaction. I tend to keep focused on work time being work time, however as I put a lot of hours in at times I have a couple of chilled days to offset it. It's great.

DinnaeFashYersel · 15/08/2024 12:50

I prefer completely wfh.

I visit our office once every 6 weeks. That's enough for me.

I never thought I'd fancy wfh but turns out I love it. I will never work in an office again.

ComtesseDeSpair · 15/08/2024 12:58

I’d review this one: you can only claim tax relief for WFH if your employer doesn’t have an office, or you have a contractual requirement to WFH. If you simply choose to sometimes because your employer offers the opportunity, you aren’t eligible.

I’m in Ireland…the rules are different here. We can claim these for the days we wfh.

@Positivenancy interested to know about the tax relief for WFH. I work some days from home but not consistent days - is this claimable?

longdistanceclaraclara · 15/08/2024 13:45

You're about three years too late to the story.

I've been hybrid since 2011, would
Never go back to the office full time.

Positivenancy · 15/08/2024 13:46

I enjoy my office days too though, I wouldn’t want to be home every day.

Oblomov24 · 15/08/2024 13:52

I used to work 3 in the office, 1 at home. That was perfect.

Soshu · 15/08/2024 14:02

I go in one day a week which I enjoy but absolutely love wfh. I’m in a tech role and it’s perfectly suited to remote working. I work compressed hours so not having a commute helps that massively.

I’ll have set a wash to run before I wake up, can hang it out and do loads of other chores in the time I’d otherwise be in the car commuting. I’m far more productive as there’s no one passing by your desk for an off the cuff chat. I can prep dinner whilst I’m making my lunch - which I still eat at my desk while answering emails.

The work life balance is amazing.

Soshu · 15/08/2024 14:05

The derogatory comments I get are from people who can’t work from home including a taxi driver, builder, community nurse. Coupled with they don’t really understand what I do

Turfwars · 15/08/2024 14:11

It's the best!

I went 2 days WFH and it's the best thing I ever did. I had a long commute, now manageable, I'm actually at my desk more at home because I don't get waylaid making a cup of tea. I get a little extra sleep. I don't use as much petrol and 40% less wear and tear. DS is of an age he can look after himself with little or no supervision. He usually likes to do his homework sitting beside me.

I put on a wash before I start work. At 11am tea break, that gets hung out. Another wash goes in and at lunchtime I hang that out as well. For us, that's almost all the laundry done over the 2 days.

I meal prep in what used to be commuting time I make one dinner to eat, and prep another so on my days WFO, I'm ready to cook right away when I get home.

I don't think I could do fully remote in my job, I need some face to face interaction with my team and to do the role. Work is flexible in general, there's never been a problem ducking out for 15 mins.

Whatineed · 15/08/2024 14:16

Yes I love it and living for my 2 WFH days gets me through a chaotic start to the week. I park all the things I need complete focus for on those two days and try to avoid meetings and calls then.

I usually do two extra hours a day on those days so it's a win for the company. I let my dc drive to his apprenticeship on those days as he's currently learning to drive, then get back and take the dog out for his morning walk. Then I can schedule a lunch break around the temperature (it's currently 32 degrees here so he doesn't suffer a hot dog walk), and if I have recordings or training to go through I can sit in the garden while he has a good sniff. 😊

I save money on dog sitters and fuel, and I normally prep a sandwich or salad to eat while I'm working.

Sometimes I even vacuum the stairs as I walk up to my home office and down for my dog walk.

Because I can take 8am appointments at the doctors, vets etc I never have to take time off work or arrive late around personal appts. I also can accept deliveries without stress, and here I can even leave some online returns on my doorstep to be picked up in the day.

So my weekends as a single mother can be free of a lot of shopping and washing duties!

Twilightstarbright · 15/08/2024 14:21

As someone in HR responsible for culture and engagement, hybrid is the best of both for a lot of people.

The off the cuff chats that MNers seem to hate are really beneficial for me and others.

hattie43 · 15/08/2024 14:26

I do two days on site and 3 at home , a perfect routine .

seven201 · 15/08/2024 20:45

I am jealous. I'm a teacher so obviously get the school holidays off, which is amazing as I have young kids. Every now and again I look at work from home/hybrid jobs. Maybe one day I'll apply. For me I'd love to be able to do things like empty the dishwasher and hang a load of washing up on my lunch break. Or just being in for if you need a plumber to come round. My dd goes to both breakfast club and after school clubs, whereas all my work from home friends rarely use either. I'm glad many people have an improved work-life balance since hybrid has taken off.

LlynTegid · 15/08/2024 21:16

One of the bonuses depending on your workplace is that if there is someone who in some way is annoying (unintentionally) you spend less time with them.

Positivenancy · 15/08/2024 21:44

@LlynTegid yes!! Definitely the case some days…😂
