Or is this bloke an axe murderer

Someone I know seems to be trying to make better friends, given the nature of our acquaintance, I’m not hugely worried about this, but it turns out he is a surgeon and has offered to organise an outpatient appointment for me. He isn’t my doctor. He knows my name and address

I am not going to take up the offer but I am assuming that this is soo unprofessional it might be something he could even lose his job over if it was found out, but maybe I’ve misunderstood how the NHS works. Should I be worried? I’m aware that he can probably access my medical records as well, if he wanted to

aibu to be slightly freaked out by this?

It sounds like he has some awful professional boundaries so yeah I'd be steering well clear. And yes people can potentially lose jobs over that kind of stuff though some professionals seem to be made of Teflon!

Sethera · 14/08/2024 19:56

It sounds very strange. Is it an NHS or private appointment he has offered to arrange? Are you already in the system for whatever it is you'd be seeing someone about?

Loubelle70 · 14/08/2024 19:57

It depends. Tbh id accept the offer of speedy appointment..a lot will disagree but in reality majority would accept instead waiting years possibly..are you sure he just won't give your name and d.o.b?. Whats the context of you meeting etc

Wombbaalaa · 14/08/2024 19:59

if I’m really honest , I’d accept the faster appointment. Probably wrong to do so though I guess.

HotCrossBunplease · 14/08/2024 20:09

To be clear, the appointment would be with another doctor, not with him? Has he said something like “oh I know John’s secretary, will see if I can get you on his cancellation list” or something like that?

Ethylred · 14/08/2024 20:10

Oh go for it you fusspot.

Donotneedit · 14/08/2024 20:20

thanks all!
its nhs and no I am not in the system waiting for treatment, it’s an mri scan. I very much doubt he would be at the appointment.

he is a neighbour, I guess I’m just wondering how much of a professional boundary breach it is because if it’s not a big deal that’s different to it being totally against the rules and a sackable offence.

Thank you, he said if I want to, he might be able to arrange an outpatient appointment for me

I’d be delighted if this isn’t a big deal and he’s not a nutter :)

He does have access to your medical records but if he actually goes to check them without a good reason (like you being his patient) he will be disciplined. We can't even look at our own records, never mind someone else's who is not on our caseload.
MRI is not the same as a medical procedure and, I imagine, may be relatively easy to organise. It's not like he is bumping you up on a liver transplant list.

britneyisfree · 14/08/2024 20:27

They do that all the time in outpatients. I've seen someone walk in and speak to reception and be seen for a scan after explaining what was wrong. She went in front of me and said thanks mate on her way out.

She was a nurse but based on their conversation it wasn't prebooked.

I think it's like opening a new till for your mate if you work in Tesco 😂

That wouldn’t be OK either, though, if he’s talking about an NHS doctor.

Doctors shouldn’t be calling in favours to help someone jump the NHS queue because they fancy them. It doesn’t mean he’s an axe murderer but it does mean his professional standards/ethics are extremely dubious.

Did he say this in a response to you saying you were worried about something or that you had x wrong with you? That seems less strange because there will be a way to triage and refer people for scans.

beeloubee · 14/08/2024 20:36

By the way you can get private mri easily if you are in a rush at all

yeah I told him I’d had some back issues. I just thought it was weird that he offered when he’s not my doctor, I guess my concern is whether this is serious malpractice or not

I didn’t say it was OK, I was asking if that was what he said.

PandyMoanyMum · 14/08/2024 20:50

Hmmmm, but someone has to take responsibility to feedback the results of the scan to you….so this sounds a bit strange to me

CosmicDaisyChain · 14/08/2024 20:53

How is this even going to work if nobody has actually referred you for an MRI? I had one Monday. I had to wait 2 months. My consultant referred me.
