Not sure if I am been over sensitive so posting on here for advice

I work in retail have been at my current job for 10 years and out of the time I enjoy it.
I have a colleague (same level) who i feel is putting all the work on to me, over the weekend it was busy so a lot of the jobs hadn't been done. I started doing one job and he kept asking me how long I would be doing it as there was loads of work to do even though there are plenty of other staff he just kept asking me.
I told him that once I finished doing the job I was doing I would move onto the next, I just can't understand why he kept asking me. I did completed 3 different jobs that day.
Another colleague took all day to do one job (works longer days than me) and he did not ask her once how long it would take her.

Can you have a word with your manager? Sounds like he's decided you are his personal servant

Isittimeformynapyet · 14/08/2024 18:27

You'd only be unreasonable if you fail to do something to tackle this.

Speak to your line manager (without whining - just be matter of fact).

Join a union. The other advice you’ve been given here is great, and it would be a great idea for you to visit he company policies assuming you’ve either been given them or have access to a shared drive where you can read up. However, if it’s possible for you to join a union, that’s what they are all about!

@Igmum I will have a word with my manager tomorrow. I have low self esteem so having someone questioning how long it will take me to do my job makes me feel rubbish about myself and that I am not good enough.

Good luck - if you have a decent manager they should be on your side (and it's their job to talk to you about your performance, not some random new guy's)

TheFlis · 14/08/2024 21:20

Just keep telling him “yeah speak
to Brenda (or whatever the manager’s name is) if you’re concerned, it’s her job to manage our workload’.

I worked in retail and the mangers used to do this. Leave me with the delivery to tick off, come and ask: how long and or: you have 1 h. I smiled and nodded: yes, ok. Most of the time no one spoke to me anyway, apart from 2 colleagues, so I never said to anyone casually, only spoke about the business. This customer wants this, I am going to the store room. It was bizarre but whatever.

sorry, to edit it:

LOL, one couldn't get over it when they regional manager allowed me to stay on permanent contract and tried to make my life unpleasant: would tease me in front of customers, me - deaf ear. Would say things even like the shop did not do well on the weekend because I was on staff ( not mentioning others) - the shop did well and I had again - deaf ear. The job was going and going, apparently no one really thought my performance was bad, just people who try to belittle others. As long the pay slip was coming, I would give shit. When I left, it was because some customers were vile.

It could be that your colleague may see you as an easy target.

If you work to the absolute best of your ability, and can work well with. everyone then you have covered yourself so if you get into a union, the union rep can use your ideal work ethic as ammunition against the colleague who is causing the issues.

Bullying occurs when an individual targets one person and treats them differently to the rest.
