Hi all,
Not sure where to post this so please bear with me. We live in a private rental house which is damp, there's black mould everywhere and water leaks through the roof when it snows/rains heavily. There's also unexplained leaks through our kitchen ceiling/downstairs loo light socket. We have been reporting these issues for 4 years and have been largely ignored, twice 2 workmen have come to "look at the roof" say it's fine then dissappear. We can't move atm due the crazy rental market and the fact DP has a CCJ -we've already tried.
FINALLY the landlord has agreed to do some damp proofing. However when the workman came round he asked where we'd be sleeping as we can be in our bedroom for 2 weeks. Work also needs to be done one the front room and the entire hallway, front door to kitchen. We also have a 3yr old who is terrified of power tools.
This isn't really and AIBU more a what would you do? We can afford hundreds of pounds for an airbnb for 2 weeks so fo we have to just accept it'll be a nightmare or can we ask the landlord to pit is up elsewhere/reduce our rent so we can afford to stay elsewhere? No family close by and no friends who could put us up for that length of time

I guess check your contact, we are having a new kitchen installed and they are putting us in a hotel for three nights as we both WFH and it will be noisy

Ilovegoldies · 13/08/2024 15:25

They should be finding you alternative accommodation if your home will be uninhabitable.

Caroparo52 · 13/08/2024 15:54

They should be putting you up somewhere else for duration of works

DP works from home too, although I suppose he could go into the office. It's more me and a toddler being at home with workmen in and out sanding/drilling/whatever else they need to do. I'll check our contract, thats a good shout! Unfortunately we have no direct contact with the landlord, it's all done through a letting agent so communication is like pulling teeth!

Just a comment on the CCJ, I had one I didn't know about that was 5 years old and we got a mortgage fine, we went through a broker and got our second choice of mortgage so don't write buying a house off. Might be worth going through a broker if you're in a position to but are just worried about the CCJ.

Check out Shelter, OP. Good advice on there regarding your rights.

It will hinge on whether your home is inhabitable or not. If you can live in it but it will be noisy and messy, no there is no obligation for landlord to put you up somewhere. If electric and water will be off, roof removed to re do etc, then you should be provided with alternative accomodation, this could be a b and b or similar.

Yeah this is the thing, I don't think they'll be doing anything to the kitchen, not sure if they'll need the electricity on or off -that's a good question to ask though! I was hoping we might be able to pay less rent and use that money on an air bnb or something like that. The guy that came round said he's never done damp proofing when someone lives in the house, it's always vacant so he was surprised we'd be staying. We've also got to move and cover our hall/bedroom/front room furniture as nothing can be near the walls 🙄
