Work party

My work place are having a party in a few months time during the working week on a day I do not work. I work part time.

I knew this event was coming up and spoke to my manager about it and said hopefully it won't be on this day as I'm not the only part time member of the company but it is.

I can't change my days around due to childcare.

Everyone will be given 5 hours out of work to attend.

How is this fair to employees that work part time?!

I feel like women are punished for being part time due to having children!

Sorry but you are being ridiculous.

Firstly you say it's about...

Then you say you can't make the date anyway due to an appointment with your child.

Could your child's father take child to appointment and then you could attend?

Are you that desperate to go to a work party? In my experience they're normally a bit shit at best.

Wakeywake · 13/08/2024 19:32

Don't be ridiculous. I missed the work party last year because DH was having an operation. I should have kicked a fuss they didn't rearrange it to a date that suited me, right?

Obviously I am being very unreasonable!

I wrote this out of frustration.

My work place is small so it feels more personal and because I'd already spoken about it to my manager about him suggesting it not be on this day of the week, the same day that everyone else that is part time also has off, I was disappointed. We have very few part time employees as it is.

I would never miss out on the commitment I have with my child, that comes before anything. However this is on my day off for a reason.

That's not the point though - I would never expect my work place to accommodate me when I have plans. It's the point it's on this particular day.

I'm just sad that a team building exercise which is being put on purely to build morale, that also takes place on work premises, hasn't been done to accommodate everyone.

And as for the 5 hours - yes I am a bit bitter that everyone is getting paid time when I'm missing out but no I'm not going to be spitting my toys out of the pram at work!

I work 0.8 FTE. We had a departmental get together/celebration thing a few months ago. It was on a day I normally work - yay! But it was also a day my dd had a music exam and dh was away, so I had to take her. That's life sometimes.

Abd it's not really like everyone is being given 5 hours off. It's not like they can go and do their own thing.

They could have.
They should have.

Any D&I training says to do this so not to alienate people with commitments on other days, ie some religions couldn't do a Friday due to prayers.

They haven't accommodated you.

Personally I'd make my manager aware I was disappointed not to have been included and leave it at that.

My workplace is very woke and none of our trainings have ever said this.
Good thing too, as once you start down the slippery slope of accomodations, you'll never get anything done in a workplace that's actually diverse. Ironically.
It's OK if you only have one group, whose needs you can clearly accommodate over others. But then it descends into conflict.
Hindus for example have multiple prayer days and religious observances. Tuesday and Thursday, Muslims on Friday, that only leaves less than half the working week to schedule something.

Another example
Few people know or care, that Sikhs can't eat any sort of ritually slaughtered meat. Probably because they're such a small minority. So places try to be inclusive by making everything halal.
Of course Sikhs can eat the vegetarian food instead, but if it's good enough for them it's good enough for Muslims surely? And therefore, no need for halal in the first place?

However in this case OP I don't think you're U! If a day that everyone can attend exists they should have chosen that.
